The classic album Be Yourself Tonight has now been enhanced by extra tracks and reissued in deluxe packaging with new photographs. I think the album was intended as the band's excursion into R&B and Soul, but it's much more than that in its stylistic variety, exquisite musicianship and stirring songs.

The sonic delight starts with the uptempo Would I Lie To You, followed by the delicate pop of There Must Be An Angel, and reaches a climax on the duet with Aretha Franklin, a brilliant tour de force. Conditioned Soul is another gem with beautiful intricate and dramatic guitar infusions and Lennox at her vocal best on some of their most poetic lyrics.

I know there are people would love some of the tracks on this set but personally I think, they are lame selections. Just another way of making money on the old stuff... The 2003 version of this series - Decades has way better tracks. Maybe I just like the more exciting and up beat music... I am giving it a 2 stars for the 10% of its decent tracks.

Eurythmics are best remembered as a singles band, and I was quite content for years with their Greatest Hits cd. Given the strength of Annie Lennox's solo work, I felt it was about time I explored the career of her old band more fully. A couple years later, I'm still listening to these albums on a regular basis.

Unlike traditional box sets, this is simply the re-issued discs of all the Eurythmics studio albums. Each cd, along with its packaging, can be purchased separately, but every one of these albums is unique and completely worth owning. Every album is packed with bonus tracks, most of which are pretty forgettable, but they do highlight the strengths of the albums themselves - not because they're so bad in comparison, but because the different mixes show how perfect ... I enjoyed Eurythmics (note that there is no "the" in front of the name of the group) from their first top 40 hit. Their music grew increasingly bizarre as the 80s progressed, and my taste did not evolve at the same pace, so I lost track of the group until recently. After purchasing this CD, I wish I had kept pace with them. This music sounds refreshing and artistic nearly 20 years after some of it was originally recorded, a sure sign that much of this music was ahead of its time.

Eurythmics is defined as the art of interpreting musical compositions by rhythmical, free-style bodily movement; essentially a kind of modern dance. The harmonica player who did the famous work in Missionary Man, Jimmy Z is one of the greatest performers on the face of the Earth. I saw them at the Miller Music Fest in Montreal in the mid 1980's and he blew Gerry Parc apart. The rest of the band was good. But he was beyond great and this cd is worth buying just because of his presence on it.
