I can not compare this version with others it's the first "Boris" I have ever listened to. I enjoyed the performance very much. It was good to have both versions for the price of one. What I don't understand is why the libretto has the russian rendered in cyrillic. Why not a phonetic Russian that none Russian speakers can follow? But do not let this small quibble put you off a fine recording.
True, I prefer the Crespin recording with Solti above all the rest. And a close second is Szell's sublime live 1949 recording with Reining--sounding fresher than she later does in the studio for Kleiber (although Sena Jurinac is never anyone to sneeze at). But this is a respectable third place for me--in a very crowded field.
The sound of this Gala release is not as bad as some on this site complain. I have an equalizer in my mp3 software =--it's free in Winamp--and that adjusts quite nicely for the somewhat muffled quality of this 1978 live recording. There are clearer sounding live recordings, even some made 30 ... Read More:

This "highlights" recording, one of the most recent of the Chandos "Opera in English" series, is a superlative issue that must be heard by all lovers of Richard Strauss and fine singing. Indeed, the singing is truly exceptional; mention must be made immediately of the silken voiced Octavian of Diana Montague - from start to finish she maintains a scrupulous control of legato and beauty of tone (similar to, but in my view surpassing, Susan Graham). Rosemary Joshua's Sophie surpassess most other more famous singers of this taxing role; she is truly a match for the likes of Lucia Popp and Elisabeth Schumann. Listen to the ravishing floated pianissimos in the presentation of the silver rose scene, and the final trio and duet, and I am sure you will agree. ... Read More:

Every now and then a brilliant tribute album is released that celebrates the music of a certain artist, group or music style, like the album "Rhythm, Country & Blues" that was produced by Don Was. I think that I've found the perfect candidate for a tribute album like that: Bobby Womack. Just listen to the wealth of material that is available on this double CD, that could be recorded with a group of musicians that deeply respect Bobby and that know his songs inside-out (there are enough of them). Bobby contributed so much to albums of e.g. Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, as a singer, songwriter, arranger and guitarist that it would only be fair to shed a new light on his vast talents on an album with close friends that would like to ...
