Well, I have been listening to this amazing 2-disc set over the last couple of days nonstop,and I must say that there are certain people in life who are simply unnaturally talented.....they seem so gifted in some very specific way; as if there is nothing in the world that they are more well suited for than one specific thing. Einstein was seemingly born to understand the world through mathematical models and theory, and Al di Meola was born to express and create through music. I owned the first two Return To Forever albums on vinyl back in the seventies when they first were released. I remember them as excellent and worth hearing. Like many people, I sold off my vinyl albums and switched to CDs when the technology went that direction. The Return to Forever music went into my rear view mirror until I bought this Anthology set.

The music sounds better than ever thanks to improved production of sound via the cleaned up sound via digital work. I was blown away by the better sound immediately. The crisp and clear quality of the music sounds like a brand new recording compared to the old vinyl albums played on the old needle-based technology. The quality of the sound is startling.

Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (1973), gave us the first incarnation of the band to feature its most famous instrumental configuration...i.e., no female vocals, no saxophone, no flute. No lyrics at all, pure music. We get the more conventional rock instrumentation for which the band would become famous; guitar, keyboards, bass, drums. There would be additional lineup changes to follow, but the basic formula was in place and set the stage for a run of excellent studio efforts from the group.
This probably is not Return to Forever's best album, but it is my personal favorite. There is a heavy vibe here, with a very distinct proto-metal sound. However there is also a significant emphasis on latin themes, and you can hear it, especially in the percussion and ... Read More:

Return to the Seventh Galaxy: The Anthology

This is well worth picking up for anyone curious about RTF, especially for three tracks from a radio concert featuring the very short-lived lineup of Corea, Clarke, the great Bill Connors, Steve Gadd and Mingo Lewis (also, these tracks are mysteriously unavailable on iTunes' version of this now OOP CD). It covers the band's Polydor records period, which means that there are no tracks from "Romantic Warrior," RTF's big hit. I like the Connors version more than Al DiMeola's more gymnastic approach, though the group are all fine writers, which keeps their work from descending into wankdom. Good overview, but all of their recordings leading up to the jump-the-shark "Musicmagic" record are worth hearing as are some incendiary live shows that are out there.
