I have been an Andre Previn fan as long as I have been playing the piano--he is an amazing talent. I have also been a Sylvia McNair fan for years. And after hearing this CD and the "Sure Thing-The Jerome Kern Songbook" CD, I am a David Finck fan, too.

Sylvia has a beautiful voice, but singing for her is not about showing off her range, it's about the words and the mood, and so she sings with amazing feeling. Andre Previn's piano is brilliant, as always, and this album is an inspiration for all of us who accompany other musicians. His style and talent come through while never overshadowing the words from Sylvia.

Some songs I enjoy more than others. For some reason, "Two Ladies In The Shade Of The Banana Tree" just doesn't work for ... Read More:

I have "Marcus Garvey," "Hail H.I.M.," and this two-for-one cd. This one is my favorite. It has a brighter sound than Marcus Garvey and Hail H.I.M. and the songs are just beautiful. My favorites are "The Sun," "No More War," "Throw Down Your Arms," and "Door Peep." To be honest, there isn't a bad song on the entire cd!

This anthology has everything and gives a very complete record of the incomparable Burning Spear. The first disc has the older stuff from the Marcus Garvey era that most fans die for. The second disc is weaker and has more of a crossover feel that is less interesting. Some of the later songs like 'Social Living' are very good however. The live version of 'Jordan Live' especially is classic. In college I used to use the opening to that song for my reggae show. This is definitely a CD worth having.

This album is one of Spear's best, along with Marcus Garvey. The songs Any River, The Sun and I W.I.N. are simply awesome. His voice is clear and the instrumentation is marvelous. One of the best reggae albums ever made.
