This cd combines some of the prettiest songs on Broadway (Don't Cry for Me Argentina; Music of the Night) with some of the best chorus songs on Broadway (Big Spender, Mame) with some of the funniest songs on Broadway (Sue Me). With additional songs like the Impossible Dream and the one and only Broadway anthem (There's no business like show business), whats not to love about this cd. I highly recommend it.

Broadway's Greatest Leading Men is a great sampling of Broadway's best. I gave it a 4 1/2 star rating only because there were a few of the great shows not represented--like Pajama Game and Camelot. This collection did however open my eyes to shows I was less familar with. Performances by Robert Klein, Joel Grey and Anthony Newley were excellent, but Richard Kiley's "Impossible Dream" and John Raitt's "Soliloquy" alone made buying the CD worthwhile. It's a must for the Broadway lover. I can't wait for Leading Men II.

The Ed Sullivan Show, during the heyday of Broadway's Golden Age in the 1950s and 1960s, would often present highlights from current Broadway shows on the program. Sometime this just involved a cast member singing a number, and other times it involved performances in full costume with sets and dialogue scene lead-ins. In the process, this allowed for the preservation on film and tape of many aspects of classic Broadways shows not preserved on their cast albums, and enhanced the legacies of shows that are for the most part lost forever.
A two CD set featuring audio from some of these performances seemed like such a good idea and one can't fault the choice of selections on this first volume (a second two CD volume was chiefly ... Read More:

I have owned this set for some time, and Disc 2 is one of my all-time favorite CDs. Its packed with fabulous important milestones from the 1940's, like "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun", "South America, Take It Away", the original of the incomparable "September Song", and lots of fun smutty lyrics from various Cole Porter numbers. A must-have for fans of classic Broadway musical theater.

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN...
But they couldn't have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick's
"Anyone Can Whistle", because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim's first "serious" show...
