Coventina's Well - Traditional Celtic MusicSearch: The Hill by: Various Artists Release Date July 01, 2003 This is a delightfully varied collection of pieces, from lovely ballads to lively numbers that get your feet moving. Even the teenagers in my household enjoy this CD (you know how hard it can be to find music that both parents and kids want to hear). "Coventina's Well" has gotten a lot of playing time in my home. I'm hoping to see more releases of music with this range and appeal. |
Henry Purcell: Dido & Aeneas [United Kingdom]Search: The Hill by: Purcell, Hogwood, Bott, Kirkby, Ainsley Release Date December 12, 2005 This is certainly a good rendition of Purcell's chamber opera, well sung and performed, although I find the sound effects of thunder and lightning overdone and partly disturbing, especially since they are not in accordance with the otherwise "authentic practice" of this recording. (I am sure there was no prefabricated thunder and lightning at hand in Purcell's time, was it?) Still, there are more interesting versions of "Dido and Aeneas" available. If you are getting your first CD with this opera, try out the legendary 1961 recording with the English Chamber Orchestra, featuring Janet Baker as Dido. Purcell: Dido And AeneasSearch: The Hill by: English Chamber Orchestra, Jessye Norman, Robert Aldwinckle, Della Jones, Thomas Allen, Adrian Beers, Patricia Kern, Elizabeth Gale Release Date October 25, 1990 This never seems to make it into any "top" lists of this very dramatic short opera. I have heard the famous Janet Baker/Anthony Lewis recording for Decca. It is a fine version which I recommend. But it simply isn't as colourful as this one. Jessye Norman is a perfectly wonderful Dido. Perhaps not as moving in `drooping wings' as Janet Baker, but still in strong competition. Leppard directs better too. Anthony Lewis had a more plain-sounding orchestra, and the sound wasn't as opulent. Four Stars. |
