This collection charts all the contradictions that made up Al. Green's "pop" career. The early tracks explore Green and Willie Mitchell trying to find the formula that would traform Green into a pop ikon. The hit came with "Tired of being alone" and from then on, with tweaks in the arrangements, the "A" sides follow that winning formula.It's the "B" sides that provide the underated gems. Try "Old Time Lovin'" and in particulalr "What a wonderful thing love is" as examples of his often overlooked pleading style. I cannot well afford to get all of Al Green's Hi albums, however, this compilation helps me to grasp Hi sound's essence "Groove and be simple", as well as Al's seductive voice. It has a good design like your favorite book which you read so again and again that its jacket has worn out, and you can enjoy it like such. When you buy a new one, you should not misunderstand it as a used one. But one thing I dare to complain about the binding is its rubber holders which keep 4 CDs fastening tightly. For fear I should not break them down, I put CDs on the holders not so deeply.

Al Green is like sex -- the worst I ever had was wonderful.

How someone gives this album 1 star is beyond me. The sound quality isn't perfect, but totally adequate -- particularly, given the likely condition of the original master tapes and the facilities in which most of these recordings were made (Google Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, and you'll get the idea). I don't think you are likely to find any better quality recordings of Al Green's music.

Most Green fans will have heard most of this material. It is a fantastic retrospective on the music of an absolute industry giant.

It you don't have this album, you should.

Man, when Al Green sings, how do you not feel it?

Even when the arrangements aren't the greatest, Al Green makes it work. The patience in his singing, on things like "I Can't Get Next To You" and "Unchained Melody" makes these slower-than-the-hit versions groove.

And when the tunes are closer to the level of this great, great singer--on "Tired of Being Alone," "L-O-V-E (Love)" and "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)," Green made downright gorgeous records.

There are a couple question marks here. Why the long sloppy intro, and less-than-hi-fi recording, on "Have A Good Time"? And why did nobody clean up "I Want To Hold Your Hand"? These are two good songs, ... Read More:

To listen to Al Green; especially on this compilation is what an excellent grape is to what makes a fine wine. The music on this work is his absolute soul. Listen to the yearnings from in the beginning of his career, his restored faith in God and the love he has for music. Al invites you into the soul of his life. I personally met Al in 1983, and spent an entire day with him in his (then) Memphis Studio. (Al Green International). I can tell you that he is a perfectionist and highly critical of himself if the "music isn't flowing." He is an awe to watch. The experience was especially gratifying because he shared his workday with just a devoted fan. Al is all that; giving his heart, talent and his mind for us to savor. To buy this recording ... When will they ever make a decent Al Green compilation? This one comes closest for including his best tracks that were not released on single. Funny How Time Slips Away, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, What A Wonderful Thing Love Is and the Loving You, the latter which I have never seen on a compilation album before. All essential 5 star stuff.
