Release Date June 15, 1999
When I originally bought this CD, it was on a whim, without a preview listen, and without too much thought. I soon came to love it, and then started realizing that it (or at least the tracks from it) were being played in all of my favorite cafes, coffee-shops and even Jazz bars/lounges.
Perfect music to have playing in the background while meeting someone new, enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon with a coffee and a book, or even schmoozing with the beautiful people at a funky lounge bar with a martini.

True, I prefer the Crespin recording with Solti above all the rest. And a close second is Szell's sublime live 1949 recording with Reining--sounding fresher than she later does in the studio for Kleiber (although Sena Jurinac is never anyone to sneeze at). But this is a respectable third place for me--in a very crowded field.
The sound of this Gala release is not as bad as some on this site complain. I have an equalizer in my mp3 software =--it's free in Winamp--and that adjusts quite nicely for the somewhat muffled quality of this 1978 live recording. There are clearer sounding live recordings, even ... Read More:

I'll make this simple. This is the best of the best of the Moody Blues. The order seems natural, as if it were all intended to be one album from the start. Indeed, the only vital thing missing is Grahame Edge's marvelous poetry. A classic collection.

Mostly, the reviews have been minimal and given average ranking with, what I consider, complimentary comments. This helped me decide, what the heck, seems good enough to try a group I have only heard sparodically. A cut here and there, most recent, Mariner from the Brutal Architecture, which led me to try to find more from this group. Hey, I downloaded this album, sorry amazon, you didn't have it available, and it is really a pleasure to listen to-Plus- you have to respect any group who does a remake of an old Moody Blues tune-Gypsy- and does it well. Don't shy away from this group.

This set has exactly the same lineup as "Anthology", but with a different cover, though I think one might have to be a bit obsessive to need to have both. I have this one, and it is a fine collection. Arranged chronologically, the songs help to chart the development of one of the founding bands of the progressive rock movement. The listener gets a taste of the first incarnation, with Denny Laine and Clint Warwick, on "Go Now," then it launches into highlights from what devoted Moodies fans call the Core Seven with the twin Justin Hayward hits, "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin", followed up by a string of topnotch songs from the years during which Michael Pinder was acknowledged as the paterfamilias of the band, including Ray Thomas' "Legend Of A Mind," Hayward's ...
