I had several of the Slugs' albums on vinyl back in a previous century, but I lost track of them for many years and only rediscovered them on CD a year or so before Doug Bennett's untimely death. I was delighted with how well this music had aged, if anything I appreciated the mix between energetic pop songs and more thoughtful numbers with insightful and often bittersweet lyrics more than ever. And it's hard not to like a band that sounds as if the members are having fun, it's a refreshing contrast with the brooding self-pity that so many rock musicians indulge in. Like some other Canadian Bands (Rough Trade or The Tragically Hip come to mind) the Slugs deserved more commercial success than they achieved, the name of the band probably didn't ... Read More:

"Dance Music for a New Generation"; and that's precisely what Tazmania "Freestyle" is. As far as I am concerned, this series of compilations has bred a truley unique and memorable series of artists and songs. Hard slamming beats and lyrics touch the heart and soul. And most of these artists can sing too! Check out Stefanie Bennett's "Don't Let Me Go" and "Never Too Late". Pure Pleazure is awesome with "I Need You Now", and "When Will You Come Back to Me"....these two guys can sing! This is the first cd in the compilation and has been out since 1993, so pick it up before one day you may not be able to. This cd is a must for your collection.

There is much to praise in this Chandos Opera in English recording of The Flying Dutchman, beginning right away with the overture. The London Philharmonic is crisp and bright with lots of punch under the baton of David Parry. The louds and softs are at the extremes of the dynamic range, so be careful in the car. You might turn up the volume to just barely hear some taps on the timpani then blow your doors off with the next orchestral swell.
John Tomlinson sings the title role with noble clarity. Eric Halfvarson's Daland is a well-drawn treasure-seeking panderer. Peter Wedd sings the Steersman with lyrical ease. There isn't much to the character of Eric the baleful, jilted hunter and Kim Begley does what he can with it, neither stellar nor shameful. ... Read More:

I purchased a second copy of this CD as I couldn't find the copy I'd bought before this fantastic singer passed away. Last holiday season I was very sad not to be able to play this wonderful collection of songs - this woman is badly missed, she was a terrific talent with a great personality, and a fantastic singer, and left us all toon.

This is a first-rate collection of songs by the mature Carmen McRae. In fact, I like her mature voice and style better than her younger performances. (Same goes for Ella Fitzgerald.) Carmen's style is distinctive; as I've gotten to know her better she has become my favorite jazz singer. The details of this album are well-described by another reviewer, Bradley Briggs. One of the appeals of this album, besides Carmen's singing, is the great work of her backup musicians. But who were they? It is greatly annoying that the publisher of this CD does not give any information about the dates and places of the performances, or the names of the backup musicians. Why this omission? Is it lazyness, combined with contempt for the jazz lovers who want this information? Or ... Read More:
