This opera has become mythic in the world of the opera because it deals with a subject that is outrageous and frankly immoral. It starts like a circus with the presentation of the menagerie by a master of ceremonies, the most beastlike beast being the woman, Lulu of course.
This woman is a femme fatale so common in the clichés of the Belle Epoque from the Eiffel Tower to just before the Black Friday. She is an easy woman, not really a prostitute, at least at the beginning. A woman who wants to be free and finds her freedom in the love, meaning sex of course and derangement of the mind, she inspires in men around her and she has no limits, no sense either. Teresa Stratas is perfect, Boulez makes his own interpretation. Is not the best. The three acts (completed by another guy) is less effective and less real. I wont recommend this version at all. Christine's remain the very best.

There are not many full-length recordings of this Handel Oratorio out there, and even fewer live performances these days in this irreligious age, so I committed to this version, simply due to the reknown of the performers, people like Tear, Baker, Langridge, Watts, most of whom I had heard perform live in the 70s and 80s. I was not disappointed - under the direction of the incomparable Raymond Leppard, one of my student icons, the work unfolded in glorious procession. Absolutely stunning debut from Man.Originally released in 1969,'Revelation' was the band's very first release.The only other Man CD's I have are 'Greasy Truckers Party' and 'The 1999 Party Tour'(see my reviews).Great progressive psych here to be fully experienced.Such good playing.Best tracks are "And In The Beginning","Empty Room","And Castles Rise","Don't Just Stand There" and the best cut of the entire disc "Future Hides It's Face".Line-up:Deke Leonard-guitar&vocals,Clive John-keyboards,Ray Williams-bass,Mike Jones-lead guitar and Jeff Jones-drums.Should maybe appeal to fans of Wishbone Ash,Caravan,Trapeze and Uriah Heep.
