"New Dream" is the third of four albums by Boy Meets Girl. It was supposed to be released in 1991 according to Boy Meets Girl's website, but for some reason it was shelved. I know why. This isn't their best work. It's a stop-gap between the excellent "Reel Life" (1988) and even better, "The Wonderground" (2003).
The problem with "New Dream" is that it's over-produced. On the website, Shannon Rubicam admits that they went for an even bigger production than "Reel Life". Well, it's nice, but not quite as good. For me, I was not a big fan of the emerging hip-hop trend during that time period which, I think, groups like Bell, Biv and DeVoe were doing along with Guy, Bobby Brown, etc. There are a couple of tracks in that vein on this ... A few Hits juxtaposed by some Excellent Blues, and a Fine Duet with Cute Daughter Tasha Taylor. Stax didn't issue a whole lot of LP's in the sixties. This is a classic. Booker T and the MG's plus the Memphis Horns and Isaac Hayes are backing up Johhny on this fabulous debut. Every song is great.
