Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson is no Muddy Waters, even though he played with Muddy's band in the 70s, but "Slammin' On The West Side" is a really solid slice of contemporary Chicago blues.
It doesn't smoke all the way through, sure, but there are plenty of highlights, including a rocking, piano-driven rendition of Buddy Johnson's "A Pretty Girl (A Cadillac and Some Money)", the swaggering "I Ain't Doin' To Bad", the slowies "Early In The Morning Blues" and "Sittin' On The Back Seat Of A Greyhound Bus", a few nice, soul-flavoured numbers ("It's Good To Me", "Hey Little Girl" and "Every Woman Needs To Be Loved"), and the acoustic "Get Up And Go" (which is actually "Bottle Up And Go" in a slightly different guise).

If you have Walk 'Em....well, you have to decide. Walk 'Em's elements of groove, musicality and lowest-common denominator appeal are held in an almost-Mozartian balance. This combined with the excellent sound makes that CD a must. It made me want more - and...this CD is more - and less. Nothing here is on the level of such tracks as The Stuff You Gotta Watch or Root Man Blues. It's good enough. But rarely hellified. The instrumental A-12 is the best cut. Caveat Emptor.

Honestly, I absolutely cannot understand why these 2 masterpieces by the Gershwins are not part of standars musical repertoire, given the great qualities of the music and the immortal lucidity of the satire of the american political intitutions.
Waiting for the next great revival of these shows, Sony should AT LEAST reissue these recordings, which, in spite of the absence of spoken dialogues, are markstones of American musical theater.

Yes, this is certainly a 5-star product, and easily the best recording of "La Wally" available. I just want to correct the apologetic comments that appear in other reviews ("this is not a great opera," etc.). In my view it is a very great opera; indeed one of the greatest of all. Catalani is so good a composer that as soon as you give him a fair chance you wonder why he is not performed far more often. Negative criticism of "La Wally" tends to rather miss the point. If you listen to it expecting "verismo" and something in the "Cavalleria" mold you'll probably find the story silly and the music not full-blooded enough. But it's not "verismo;" it's a kind of poetic drama that Catalani, alone among his Italian contemporaries, was trying to develop. Indeed ... Read More:

The third installment of this flourishing series differs fundamentally from its predecessors, James Holden and M.A.N.D.Y. Whilst comparisons rarely prove helpful in determining an album's merit, Claude Vonstroke's effort oozes his unique touch and feel for mixing minimal house, but lacks the consistency of the first two AtC spanned over two discs. He selects some thick and satisfying tracks, several of which were released an unusual number of years ago to be included in such a package; it is gratifying, however, that due to superfluous mixing talent these "dated" tracks sound as much akin to the rest of the track flow as did M.A.N.D.Y.'s release. The problem? Lack of balance and artistic energy between the two discs.
