A Different Lifetime

Search: So Sorry
by: Spearmint

Release Date September 05, 2005
Spearmint are one of those journeyman underground Britbands that Anglophiles love to discover and claim as their own until some big bad American major ruins them by making their music easily available in "the States". That's not bound to happen with their fourth release, A Different Lifetime, a song cycle about how we all indulge in that self-fulfilling prophecy of ruining relationships. "It Will End" is song one, setting the tone for the joy and drama of the 14 tracks to follow. Along the way, they pay tribute to "Scottish Pop", "Julie Christie!", and "The Flaming Lips", to name three jaunty cuts, and peter out towards the end when singer/guitarist Shirley Lee finds himself "Single Again". They're not as assertive as Stereophonics or wimpy ... Read More:

Search: So Sorry
by: Bugz in the Attic

Release Date October 09, 2007
There's a lot or a little of breakbeat, techno, house, synth-pop, hip hop, reggae, and 70's soul featured in this mix. It's a collaboration of 9 members that make up Bugz in the Attic, and with each one picking a track or two, it makes for a huge variation across the board of musical genres. What is notably missing is any of the genres this group is most known for: deep house, nu jazz, and broken beat. They've gone for something completely different with this mix series that is well known for basically, putting whatever the heck you want on it.

It does make for an enjoyable ride through all the styles of music, hitting some notable tracks like Rammellzee and K Rob's early old school rap, Beat Bop, where they play just about all 10 minutes ... Read More:

Messager - Veronique

Search: So Sorry
by: Andre Messager, Ohio Light Opera, James Stuart, J. Lynn Thompson, Charles Kondek

Release Date May 19, 1998
Thanks and thanks again to Newport Classic for yet another "find." In this case, the of Andre Messager (NPD 85635/2), in English, with the indefatigable Ohio Light Opera troupe under J. Lynn Thompson. Having given us a welcome in the best Victor Herbert tradition, Newport Classic now gives us a fully staged version of this post-Offenbach work on two CDs. Okay, the plot is fluff. Okay again, the old EMI version in French had a lot more elegance (and none of the tiresome dialogue). But there is no other "Veronique" in the catalogue now, at least in the USA, and the producers have thoughtfully given the dialogue separate tracks so it can be cued out on repeated hearings. Is it, I keep asking, possible to read lines like these ... Read More:

Search: So Sorry
by: Herd

Release Date October 22, 2002
Even though this posting lists this particular title as having one disc, it's actually a 2-CD release. As many of you know, The Herd was Peter Frampton's early band - prior to joining up with Humble Pie. The Herd put out three lp's between 1967-68 and after closely checking out this pressing's total of thirty-one tracks, 'Underworld' looks to feature a good most of the light-weight British pop band's repertoire. Tunes here that I was sort of impressed with were "From The Underworld", "Paradise Lost", "Charlie Anderson", the somewhat inspiring "I Can Fly", "On My Way Home", "Sugarloaf Mountain" and "Understand Me". The Herd wasn't quite what I thought they'd be - but okay. Certainly doesn't suck by any means. Personnel: Peter Frampton-guitar & vocals, ... Read More:

Search: So Sorry
from: 440 Records, LLC.

Release Date April 26, 2005
His music is diverse. He can jam with the guitars, he can add some piano, and he has the vocal talent to back up his descriptive lyrics. It's hard to categorize this music, but it's closer to folk rock than anything, even samples on some bluesy feel. I bet you would hear his music all down New Orleans if people would look just as hard for good music as they do through the $5 DVD bin at Wal-Mart.
