The second disc in this 2-CD set is not very "lost." It originally came out, minus the last track, on a vinyl Rhino LP called Cheaper Thrills. Then the British Edsel label put out a CD version called Live 1966, adding the last track (which is actually from 1967, recorded for the KQED radio station). Then the US Varese Sarabande label reissued it as Live In San Francisco 1966, plus there's some other CD reissue called, once again, Cheaper Thrills. The recording on the Varese Sarabande version (still available) is excellent, and both discs in this set are comparable.

I imagine that there are plenty of reviews available for what appears here as Disc 2, so I'm going to confine myself to reviewing Disc 1. There's no recording date ... Read More:

Live in San Francisco 1966

The sound quality is poor, its the kind of record that sounds like a blur after you have listened to it for more than fifteen minutes, and the kind that disrupts any mix CD or playlist because of differing levels. The recording has a lot of highs and no separation. The bass is practically inaudible. The highlights are the first three songs, particularly Moanin' at Midnight which is more of a Howlin' Wolf potpourri than a straight cover. But as Janis screams, mimicking Howlin' Wolf's famous cry, you can see how much talent she really had. Overall it's an album for serious fans interested in a complete collection or the development of the band.

The Strangeloves were a "three hit wonder" back in the mid-'60s, although "I Want Candy" is the only one of those hits that is really remembered today. Supposedly three brothers from Australia, they were actually a three man writing/producing team from New York. This CD contains almost all of the recordings ever released by the Strangeloves. The recordings are fun, but most of them are highly derivative of "I Want Candy", featuring heavy percussion and vocals yelled by all three guys. But if you are looking for a Strangeloves CD, this is the one to get.

Another great volume of mostly obscure or forgotten fun, light-hearted distaff pop tracks from the the late 1960's. The volume covers the years when pop was brassy, sassy and the UK version of the Supremes. Unless you're a completist collector, this CD offers a slew of tasty tracks that are hard to find elsewhere. One of the few series where Volume 6 is pretty close in quality to Volume 1 - well worth adding for fans of 60's pop or women vocalists.
