We're all pretty sure we knew where the blues came from - the delta, right? The streets of Chicago? But the songs here prove that the blues is the people's music, invented and crafted by working folks. At first my interest was historical, but these songs are so close to the emotional bone that they slip under the skin and stay there. "Russia Let That Moon Alone", for example, is hilarious on first listen, prophestic afterwards. ("Time done change" she sings over and over, until you friggin' believe it!) Or One String, a homeless man who uses a tin can and a one string guitar, but is harsh and melodic at the same time. This is my favorite Blue Masters album, and I own them all. I was recently traveling on a transoceanic flight and heard an entire medley dedicated to Katrina. One of the selections was the Levee Prayer by Jimmy Thackery. The song was both inspirational and haunting. I was not familiar with Jimmy Thackery before this. After hearing only one selection, I knew I had to investigate further. I went to Amazon, listened to a few sample cuts and ordered the CD. I am quite glad I found this and would recommend it.

Docked one star for repeating the same mistake he made with Hogs In Wolfs Clothing. Both these releases should have been stellar because McPhee, in the same breath as Rory Gallagher, John Mayall, and Peter Green is one of the kings of British blues rock, and paying homage to one of his heroes should be a pleasure, not a chore to listen to. Intead, Muddy Waters Songbook is even more uninspired than it's predecessor, and sounds like it was recorded on the budget of a teenage local band doing their first demo. The guitar sound is unbelievably weak, the entire band just sounds like they want to get it over with. Such a shame that a talent like TS McPhee has been reduced to putting out this type of junk. Don't waste your money on this stuff.
