I always liked Loreena McKennitt, but it wasn't until I saw her "Nights of the Alhambra" DVD that I became a real fan. Prior to that, I was attracted by her beautiful voice and her haunting arrangements of traditional Celtic music. But after seeing "Alahambra", I realized that she also plays several instruments with virtuousity, and is a great performer! Now, when I listen to her new Ancient Muse DVD, I get more out of it, because it recalls the concert and makes the experience a (virtual) visual as well as an audio treat!

I'm on my third listen of this lovely CD. One Safe Place, a song she says she wrote "in the shadow of tragic world events", echoes both the melancholy and hope she must have been feeling at the time. Thank You, Help Me reminds me what prayer is all about. As with any good folk album, these are simple songs about complex issues that get to the heart of the issue in a straight forward manner. Nothing beats great writing and singing. Sit back, relax and enjoy...

Very nice mostly Celtic collection. Usually hard to understand the words, but that is, alas, common these days. The instrumentals are particularly nice, especially "Give Me Your Hand". What the heck is "Scarborough Fair" doing here?
An instrumental-only Celtic album from David Arkenstone along these lines would be great. For me, Spirit of Ireland mostly missed the mark.

When I first heard the CD's it was readily apparent that the instrumental accompaniment was much richer. But Loreena's voice is just as dazzlingly beautiful and enchanting as ever.
However, when I watched the DVD - I was absolutely blown away!
The interaction of all on stage is phenomenal. You can see and feel the energy riding the musical currents that were created that night.
It is an awesome DVD and any who have only heard the CDs - I emphatically encourage you to get and watch/listen to the DVD.

Madonna of Winter and Spring was composed in honour of Mary, mother of Jesus. The piece the jacket notes inform portrays the action of her soft, yielding influence of forces which are assertive, brutal and despondent, but her "touch" is felt from time to time. Such deep liturgical associations is a rarity now,Harvey seems deeply committed to the spirit world,of images from Catholicism, his music predictably enough does resemble Messiaen, with its brilliant sense of orchestration, the stop=go gestures, the complex webs of wind filigree moments, the metal bell timbres, are all DNA residues of both creators. Conflict,is very similar to much of what I've heard emanating from IRCAM, Eotvos, Dufourt, Grisey, Murail, and Boulez which I suspect is the hidden fountain,a musical resevoir. The first ...
