First of all, and having been born during the Truman Administration, I have either seen or heard them all so to speak. If I had to address the question of who were among the best recently performing female vocalists I would come up with Barbara Streisand, Sarah McGlocklin or Natalie Cole. The CD under focus here, Black Coffee: Best of the Decca Years, a compilation of Miss. Peggy Lee songs of that time contraint will show Peggy Lee to be the best female vocalist ever, in my opinion. Peggy Lee was one of several female vocalists that started their careers in the WW ll era, the other ladies being Jo Stafford(the troops called her lovingly GI Jo), Doris Day, and of course the inimitable Rosemary Clooney. The tracks ... Read More:

By general consensus, the all around best album Peggy Lee ever made, was the LP entitled "Black Coffee". The folks at Decca of course know it and that's why they've attached those two words to this collection. I bought it thinking to replace my LP and getting all the "other delights" into the bargain. However, corporate deception is alive and well. Of the original LP's 12 tracks (all marvels), only 4 are included here. A few more (mainly from the two albums "Dream Street" and "Mr. Kelly's") are also top drawer, but the rest, most of the first CD in fact, is forgettable-to-horrible.
If you want her best album complete, together with one of her best ("Sea Shells") on one CD, see Amazon's listing for it. But give this one a pass.

THE MONKEES-BARRELFUL OF MONKEES/MONKEES SONGS FOR KIDS!: Since the Pre-Fab Four were always wacky, charismatic, and yes, funny on their fast paced TV series, this Kid Rhino (retro-label kings Rhino Records' small fry division) roundup of tunes for tots makes perfect sense. Several choices are delightfully demented, none more so than Mickey and Davy's call and response mad libs on GONNA BUY ME A DOG and the rare Peter Tork lead vocal on YOUR AUNTIE GRIZELDA (alas, PETER PERCIVAL PATTERSON'S PET PIG PORKY is nowhere to be heard here). Bread head David Gates' SATURDAY'S CHILD and Mike Nesmith's countrified PAPA GENE'S BLUES sound considerably straighter, but are nifty pieces of pop craftsmanship nonetheless. Interestingly, the dreamy PORPOISE SONG (heard ... Read More:

What can I say?
I grew up watching this show, reruns sure but this cd has some great stuff!
"SHE" is the best! How this song has never been covered is beyond me. Why?
Special edition has some great out-takes.
Monkees were cool. deal.
Release Date March 05, 2001
This fine MONKEES compilation has few flaws.
Disc One is a solid set of the MONKEES best tracks. Almost all the singles are here, with the exception of "D.W. Washburn" and "Tapioca Tundra." "Washburn" generally fares better on retrospectives than "Tundra" however, perhaps due to it's higher peak chart position (#19). As for the Mike Nesmith single, it's puzzling how BEST OF, GREATEST HITS and even "DEFINITIVE" collections sleight it consistently, despite the record having reached #34 on BILLBOARD, in 1968.
Disc Two draws from the three MISSING LINKS albums, and uses some of those CDs' best songs. Overall these two discs present a fine (if not "definitive") set of MONKEES music.

This collection of missing links has some good songs, but you could see why many of these were left off the Monkees albums. In my opinion, this is definitely the worst of the three Missing Links albums...they really improve with the other two. The solid collection of Mike songs is the only thing that really saves this album. Here are my reviews of the songs:
1. "Apples, Peaches, Bananas and Pears" - Sounds like a worse version of Last Train to Clarksville or Tear Drop City. Not a terrible song, but certainly not enough quality to be included on one of the Monkees albums. 6/10
2. "If You Have The Time" - Kind of a catchy song...again not horrible, but just not enough quality to be on an album. 6/10
