from: Decca

Release Date February 13, 2001
This compilation CD from Decca has selections that are either hit or miss. The selections here have both serious arias and comic ones. Leo Nucci is a loud, hammy Figaro in "Largo al factotum". He is deafening on the first syllable of the last "città" in the aria. Joan Sutherland is a vocal miracle in "Bel raggio lusinghier". She chooses fiendishly difficult embellishments for the cabaletta and sings them effortlessly. She ends the aria on a massive high note. This selection comes from her "The Art of the Prima Donna" recording. Marilyn Horne does a disservice to Rosina's wonderful aria "Una voce poco fa". Unlike in her studio recording of "Bel raggio lusinghier", she does not abuse rubato extensively in this aria. However, her frequent ... Read More:

by: Pavarotti

Release Date July 21, 1989

Now that the dust has settled on the careers of both Michael Jackson and Luciano Pavarotti, comparisons are apt.

Not that you'll get many of them here. I want merely to state that listening to Pavarotti sing these seven pieces by Donizetti, Verdi, Strauss, Rossini, and (of course) Puccini is like watching a Michael Jordan highlight film.

Because The Mike has been playing golf rather than basketball for several years now, it's possible to look back on his career with open-jawed admiration without having to state that he was the best ever. He may have been, he may not have been. It's irrelevant.

The pertinent point is that he had unsurpassed physical skills and intuition, was an intense gamesman, had a ... Read More:

Francesco Tamagno, The Verdi Tenor (1903-1905) - The Mythical Recordings

Here we finally have a recording of exceptional historical value: The legendary Francesco Tamagno sings a selection of Italian opera arias. Tamagno was appointed by Verdi to sing the first performance of Otello. The selection of arias in this CD includes Otello's highlights (Esultate, Niun mi tema, Ora e per sempre addio...). They were recorded many years after the historical first performance, and Tamagno's voice was probably not at his best. The quality of sound is good for the acoustic technology of the time (1903-1905). One might guess if Verdi would have chosen Tamagno in case he had known Placido Domingo, Mario del Monaco, Ramon Vinay, Giovanni Martinelli, Jon Vickers, Carlo Cossutta or Jose Cura. But he did choose Tamagno and this recording ... Read More:
