The Odd Couple is an appropriate name for Gnarls Barkley's latest album; the collaboration between mash-up extraordinaire Danger Mouse and eccentric rapper Cee-Lo Green is anything but normal. The Odd Couple continues St. Elsewhere's Grammy-winning formula of horror-cinema beats and off-the-wall rhymes, but not much else.

Gnarls Barkley has never been a duo that shied away from taking chances, and The Odd Couple is no exception. Cee-Lo sounds like a fiery gospel singer on "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)" and the beats sound like nothing else on rap radio, such as the slow jam, 9-mm-reloading sounds of "Would Be Killer."

All the songs are such a poetic delight to listen to. Tony writes such fun, flirty lyrics that leave your imagination speckled with bursts of sunshine -- "take my heart and hook it up to your veins", "I baptized her in a bubblebath". Not even the more serious songs get me down. They leave me refreshed instead. Tony oozes Harlem class and the song "Birdseye" reminds me of the movie "LoveJones". Was it a soundtrack of the movie? If not, shoulda been!

Finzi: Dies Natalis; Farewell To Arms; Two Sonnets

While never being completely satisfied with Naxos recordings of Finzi, I am glad that they exist and offer an introduction to this very special composer. Dies Natalis is his masterpiece, but the version conducted by Christopher Finzi & sung with such passion by the incredible Wilfred Brown will be impossible to improve upon... this Naxos recording also has the beautiful Farewell to Arms and the rare sonnets. A worthy exploration that one critic said long ago about a composer who is "such good company". The Diana Mc Veagh biography: Gerald Finzi: His Life and Music is an excellent read... exploring not only the man's life but detailing his poignant and haunting music.
