If this music is your type of thing (and of course, it isn't EVERYONE'S type of thing anymore), this disc is for you. Actually, ALL of the discs put out by Archeophone are fantastic. They manage to find very good-sounding discs and clean them up just enough to sound good but not ruin the music. (In other words, yes, there's crackle here and there, but at least the music sounds clean and crisp instead of muffled, as can often happen with noise reduction.) If you're interested in more of their CD's, look them up on Amazon or go to their web site (which is the name of the company, plus .com). They've got samples of every track on every one of their discs.
I have almost all of their discs, so I have this review up on all of them.

For the first 35 years of its existence, the recording industry used no electronics, no microphones, no editing of any kind for its product. Sounds for both cylinder and disc records were captured by a large horn that concentrated air vibrations down to an etching needle.
Surprisingly, this method was quite tolerable, as extant records from 80 or 100 years ago prove. Once one adjusts to the limited frequency range of acoustic recordings you quickly discover a performance dynamic unique to the format.
HITS OF '21 * Ain't We Got Fun? is the second of a series released by a British company, LIVING ERA. Horn recording had reached its technological pinnacle by 1921, as the 25 examples here demonstrate. Many stars of the 'teens and ... Read More:

How wonderful to discover and re-discover some of the musical moments from classic films. Whoever put this together did a wonderful job of reminding the listener of the talents that we love and admire and that are part of the legacy of Hollywood. Some of the songs are obscure and some familiar. As a professional I prize this CD collection and recommend it highly to anyone interested in the history of Music in Film. Not only do we get the Sweethearts--but some of their male partners, as well. It's great fun and full of great memories.

If you are interested in the history of popular recordings from 1920 to 1951, this 15 CD collection of these great songs and recordings is a must. Except for the 1920s, and due to the poorer sound of those early recordings, the AAD remastering is quite good. Included in this box set is an 80 page short bio of each artist that may be helpful, but is rather poorly written and not authoritative. But otherwise, what a great bargain, and what a great pleasure to have listened to these 300 full length recordings, many of which are rare and interesting including the many old standbys. Recommended!

Got this for my mom and she's listening to this 3 CD set like there's no tomorrow. It has lots of favorites she hasn't heard in years, and it brought back many memories for her of movies she saw long ago, some as a kid, some as an adult.
If you have a friend or relative (maybe born in the 20's or 30's) especially one who likes AMC or Turner Classics- this could be a great gift.

For reasons never quite clear to me, I fell in love with the song "You" one late night while watching "The Great Zeigfeld" on TV. I managed to capture most of it on tape, then dub it onto cassette for future delectation. I jumped at the chance to have it an a "digitally remastered" CD, but the sound quality of this German import is actually inferior to my hastily recorded copy - the sound is muddy, with very audible hiss. A small disappointment in a world of large rissues, but still a disappointment.
