Jazz SetSearch: Marimba by: Donald Martino Release Date November 19, 1996 Do they really think that putting "Jazz" in the the title will do anything to increase some kind of warm-and-fuzzy factor? I'm afraid so...The record business...is a business. And East Coast Academia from the Pre-Minimalist days ain't walkin' no more...Martino's music doesn't really gain anything from this kind of special pleading. The liner notes spend a lot of time trying to carve out a link between the young Martino's trying to make some sort of career in "commercial music" and some kind of "improvisational freedom" in his "serious" music. It was bad enough when composers from this musical world seemed content with staying locked up in its ivory tower. Tales of the DrumSearch: Marimba by: Various Artists, Soweto Percussion Ensemble Release Date May 16, 2006 This CD is absolutely impressive! Pure traditional African drumming at its best. Every time we listen to it, it just keeps getting better. All the songs on here are great. They have a great feel to them - they are upbeat happy, and want to play along. The drumming on it is complex and interesting. I greatly appreciate traditonal instumental Drumming, and good albums are hard to find. I highly recommend this one to anyone who is a traditional drum fan. To me this CD rates as well as the Drums of passion from Olatunji (2002) outstanding Nigeria drummersDrums of Passion. It is a 5 stars for sure! |
