The Doors: Myth and RealitySearch: Magic Doors by: Ray Manzarek Release Date August 20, 1996 Ray Manzarek's spoken word story of himself and The Doors is quite thorough, with many good vignettes. In addition to putting a lot of emotion into their music, The Doors incorporated a lot of intelligence, and Ray supplies the background. Blues (and some jazz and classical) for Ray, film and literary (ranging from French literature/poetry to Beat poetry) for both him and Jim Morrison. Ray speaks in glowing terms of the old blues masters like Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon (author of "Backdoor Man") and how they influenced him and The Doors. New BelieversSearch: Magic Doors by: Elk City Release Date April 17, 2007 I saw them live at a place in Brooklyn in Summer '07, and I regretfully didnt grab a cd from them while I was there. So, I searched for it on Amazon and found it. There's a few songs on here that are very enjoyable. I wanted to have it my possession as memory item from when I went to Brooklyn. That bar had indoor bocce ball!! |

Following thier original incarnation as psychedelic popsters Timebox, and preceding thier prog-rock stint as Boxer, Halsall and Patto defied genre as "Patto". "Hold Your Fire" was Patto's 2nd release, and features an interesting blend of jazzy chords, bluesy singing and straight ahead rock 'n' roll frequently wrapped in epic arrangements of prog-rock length (note only 8 cuts on the album). Warts and AllSearch: Magic Doors by: Patto Release Date It occurs to me, whilst making notes for this piece, that it is almost 35 years since I first heard Ollie Halsall and the Pattos. I saw the Beatles in 1965 (didn't hear anything but the bass). I saw Hendrix blow The Who off-stage at The Savile Theatre, London in 1967 (an event which I have yet fully to come to terms with). In September 1970 I first saw Patto and I often wonder - on no less a scale - what course my musical education would have taken without the influence of this absurd little band. We played an all-nighter at The Temple, Covent Garden - which by 2am became a doss-house for chemical abuse. He careens up and down and back and forth and somehow ends up in the perfect place every time. It's a bravura performance on a perfect song. The rest of the album is excellent, but this is my favorite Patto album, and "Give It All Away" stands as their great achievement. If you liked The Replacements' anarchic energy in the 80s, see what Patto was doing to lay down the foundations in the 70s. This is glorious stuff. |
