Let me just say: let's hope that the "casting" of the vocalists for the 3 dairymaids (specifically the 3rd one) was meant to be humerous. Listen to track 3, and you'll know what I mean. Depending on your frame of mind, it'll either have you in stitches & on the floor laughing at the image of the "ugly sister" trying to compete with the first two, or diving for the stop button in anguish. I'm assuming Sylvia McNair hasn't shared a stage (or a studio) with this particular singer since.

I'm listing to this cd right now and holy speakers batman, I want to start a happy dance right now!!! These songs are so much more fun to play than the ones in method books. My favorite tracks are Faire and Bagtelle. I can't even imagine being able to compose music like this. Andrew York is my friggin' hero!

As a complete program this is a one-of-a-kind CD that most lovers of Bartok will enthusiastically snap up. Although it is gorgeously recorded with wonderful detail and clarity, I'm not sure I would have bought this CD for Fischer's vigorous, forthright account o the Concerto for Orchestra alone. His Budapest Festival Orch. is colorful but not on the virtuosic level of the world's greatest. Fischer's reading works best in his fast, punchy account of the second movement 'Game of Pairs,' the twittering night birds of the third movement, and the vulgar nose-thumbing at Shostakovich in the fourth movement. Special attention deserves the 4 Orchestral pieces (I still don't know about any other version capable to match with this one) ; The Miraculous Mandarin is just one step behind the unsurpassable version of Antal Dorati in the Sixties ( Mercury 434 362-2) that includes besides, Divertimento, sonata for two pianos and Percussion with BBC/LSD) .

To my view, one of his top five achievements of his musical career.
