This year we commemorate the centenary of Edvard Grieg (Sep/7/1907), the greatest and most representative musician and prolific Norwegian composer, a legitimate national proud.
I guess there must have been numerous recitals and concerts due this motive, that's why I would like to point about this peerless artistic effort, because Eva Knardall consecrated herself to assume and achieve such feat; then came on stage this prestigious and solvent pianist - einar Steen-Nkleberg. To record the whole piano music of this composer, unfairly known as "a miniaturist composer". We should never forget Grieg was foremost a devoted and humble artist who felt the necessity to communicate and express himself respect his own universe, so the ... Read More:

I first heard Samson Francois play Ravel on an old phonograph record and
was amazed at his interpretation. When I bought this collection it became
one of my all time favorites. The emotion and feeling he puts into the
music along with his technical skill never cease to amaze me. The only down
side is the recording quality. It is a bit weak. I can overlook that with
the stellar performances. Buy this set and you will not be disappointed.

Amongst the works on this set is a series of excerpts from Karajan's masterful "Ring" from the late sixties. Much has been said about Karajan's approach to the Ring, but I'd like to especially recommend the first of the music-dramas (Das Rheingold): it is, in short and in my opinion, the most remarkable reading of this work available on disc - forget Solti, Levine and Barenboim, you'll be stunned to hear the life-like, soft-spoken (soft-sung), delicately played musical "scherzo" by Wagner. A scherzo it is, compared to the tragedy to come! I notice that unfortunately the prelude to Das Rheingold, an ethereal masterpiece, is NOT included in the extensive excerpts - why, I wonder?

After owning dozens of Debussy, Ravel recordings, all I can say is ,
if you have this set, no need to look further.
My Ingelbrecht sets are good, but Martinon is better.
Forget the Munch and Monteaux, Bernstein's, Levine, Karajan (UUCCKKKK) etc etc.

EDIT UPDATE:
Listening to Boulez/New York PO yesterday...terrible, read my review on that cd set...this Martinon is without doubt the finest Debussy and Ravel ever recorded, and I am going to say that EVER will be recorded. This is DEFINITIVE Ravel and debussy.*hey dude there is no such thing as definitive*. In some cases there is *definitive*. Listen to David oistrakh's 3 recordings of Shostakovich's 1st vc. Has anyone closely matched what ... Read More:
