Kvazar (Norwegian for Quasar) is an interesting progressive rock band. They can't be easily shoehorned into any one prog-rock genre, and this is truly reflected in the music on their second album, "A Giant's Lullaby". The first song, 'Flight of Shamash", starts off with emotive vocals similar to a Gregorian chant and spacey keyboards, then about 4min into the song the music shifts to a completely different style, and once again returns to the Gregorian chant style before ending with a light, funky jam. A really cool song to start off the album while only giving a hint as what would follow. Mandolins start off the next song, 'Choir of Life', which has soaring female vocals backed by flute and synth. When this recording was made at The Bear, an astonishing club/restaurant housed in two adjoining Louis Sullivan mansions across from Chicago's great Medinah Temple, the stage needed to be reinforced to accomodate all six Gospel Pearls as they stomped and jumped through this fantastic recording. The Bear, started by the irrespressible Howard Alk, formerly of Second City, took over L'Aiglon, a 40 year old classic French restaurant and re-opened with Louis Bussiere, chef, in the kitchen and Bob Dylan, singer, on stage. The Gospel Pearls were one in a string of fantastic performers, including Laurendo Almeida, Ian and Sylvia and most amazingly, Muddy Waters, that played in this incredible club.

Variety is the name of the game when listening to this CD. If you are true lover of Hawaiian music and have an appreciation for the various styles song by the very talented native artists, you will enjoy the experience.

The music is old and it is young. Don Ho is the most traditional and the acopella stylings of Keali'i Reichel are amazing!
