The last couple of days I have been listening to Eugene Ormandy including his rendition of Pictures at an Exhibition. I thought it would be interesting to compare this recording to Fritz Reiner/CSO's recording. These are both excellent takes on one of the great orchestral standards. I then thought it would be interesting to compare Guilini's 1976 CSO pictures to the Reiner's CSO recording. The Giulini CSO sounds even better, the recording quality (both are ADD) is better with warmer richer sound in greater detail, and the interpretation of the music sent shivers up me timbers. Giulini's take is very majestic and he just about turned the final track (The Great Gate of Kiev) into a coronation anthem.

James has been on the world folk scene for a lot of years, quietly doing his thing without the intervention of mega music industry. He accompanies thoughtful songs of positive subject matter with solid well played guitar. Strong melodies are sung with a rich voice, and a warped sense of humor creeps in at the right moments. James makes good poetry, presented in a grown up fashion, for the intelligent audience. "Songs Without Words" was Craig Urquhart's first recording of original piano solos. For the most part, this album is much quieter and more understated than Urquhart's later work. The titles of most of the fifteen songs have to do with nature, and the mood of the album is very calm and soothing. I found it much easier to let this one slip into the background than Urquhart's other albums, making it a great choice for reading or simply relaxing and letting the music wash over you. Very classical in style and approach with an emphasis on emotion, Urquhart is an incredible pianist and artist. I got this for my birthday as a joke because I love Brad Paisley and HATE karaoke. So my wife gave me this. Popped it in the CD player and I was really impressed. It's a fairly accuarate reproduction of the real thing (about 95% dead on), even the guitar-tone comes close, only no lyrics, so... it's easier to figure out licks and runs and, more importantly, the rhythm guitar, since it's not always prominently featured in the original recordings.

If you are a guitarist who likes Brad Paisley, you will really enjoy this CD as a great learning tool/ backing track.
