Another ST. CLAIR classical music CD featuring the ubiquitous anonymous orchestra. This company claims that "...we have compiled an entertaining and educational recording which children will listen to time after time." Can't say how absolute such a statement is. Some of this stuff isn't the most approachable for any adult newcomer, let alone a small child.

This set should have FUN tunes on it, like the Minute Waltz, Marche Militaire, Mozart's opener from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik or his dozen variations on the 1761 French melody "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman," which is more famously known as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I must confess openly to not having this item in my collection. Yet it compels me to write as there are very few examples of Arthur Fiedler conducting another orchestra outside of Boston. In 1970, he became the very first world class musician I ever heard with the Washington National Symphony. And he was on fire that afternoon. Listening to the samples, this is born out with sharp, clear, focused playing by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Dame Moura Lympany is also at her best in the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1, contributing more than the usual virtuoso performance. Oh how I would love to hear this cd just once!

In 1970, he became the very first world class musician I ever heard with the Washington National Symphony. And he was on fire that afternoon. Listening to the samples, this is born out with sharp, clear, focused playing by the BBC Concert Orchestra. I have a recording of Rachmaninov himself playing the Partita, Daisies, Polka, Midsummer Night's Dream Scherzo, and Liebesfreud, and setting aside issues of recording quality, Costa's rendition has much greater precision, refinement, and musicality. Tchaikovsky's Lullaby is so beautifully colored in twilight hues. An as delicate as the buzzing wings of a bee, unlike so many renditions of this piece, Costa's Flight of the Bumble Bee is not only a virtuosic showpiece, but a musical gem to behold. This CD offers a great program that one can just put on and enjoy.

The slack key guitar/ukelele music of Doug and Sandy McMaster is some of the most beautiful music ever put on cd. Their music evokes the beauty and peace of the Hawaiian islands, specifically Kauai, the home that inspires them.

Hawaiian music is extremely varied: some sounds like bluegrass, some could be called power-Hawaiian (definitely an oxymoron!), or Hawaiian rock; some Hawaiian singers are trying to be Celine Dion (God help us) or evoke a "Hawaii goes Vegas" sound; there are many great musicians putting out albums of wonderful Hawaiian music, Keola Beamer, Led Kaapana, and the great Iz just to name three; Doug and Sandy McMaster, though not as famous as these, are in the real, old-time authentic Hawaiian slack-key tradition. ...
