Just about everything that Smokin' Joe Kubek has put out is in a way excellent I used to collect his stuff about 5 to 10 years ago and just recently started lookin' inot him again when his pic appeared on the cover of the Southwest Blues Magazine - I got over $3000 in tapes and CD's stolen from me in Dallas back in about '95 & '96 and his stuff was all included in it.
I saw him 3 times live at J & J's Blues Bar in Ft. Worth Texas.
Don't know if he ever reads his reviews here though.

I bought a used copy of this album for next to nothing a few years ago, and I've been very surprised by how much I enjoy it. The original voice of Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, has been replaced on this album by the very capable Robert Hart (who sounds eerily similar to Rodgers on several tracks). This album consists of seven remakes of Bad Company classics (stories told) and seven new songs (stories untold).

Though it is risky for a well-known band to remake classic hits without the original band members, I enjoy these remakes. "Shooting Star" is especially solid, and I actually like it more than the original. There is a bluesy twist to that track, as well as many others, that is really interesting. I bought this CD because I had heard "Don't Smoke In Bed" and "My Old Flame" as a kid. After thirty years those songs stayed with me. That's what a real singer can do: take a song and make you feel it. It's a combination of inflection, pitch, word shape, and that something that no one can name, but you know when it's there.
"Is that all there is?" is a classic that no one will ever sing the way that Peggy Lee sings it. She owns that song. Other works on this two-fer collection don't shine the way that you would hope. Peggy Lee always is a class act but some of the songs just don't have magic. They aren't bad, but they don't make you stop what you are doing, or resonate with your soul the way that others do. THIS WAS A NICE FIND. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK SONGS, ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE ANIMES. HOWEVER THE SONG I REALLY BOUGHT THIS ALBUM FOR WAS NOT THE SAME VERSION THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. INSTEAD IT WAS MIXED WITH STRINGS AND NOT SANG AS SOULFULLY, WHICH MADE THE HIGH PRICE ALMOST NOT WORTH IT. BUT ENJOYED THE TALENTS OF KIEKO LEE, ALL THE SAME AND HOPE SHE COMES TO THE BAY AREA OF CALIFORNIA, SO I CAN GET TO SEE AND HEAR HER PERFORM LIVE.
