As Rhino records officially owns the Monkees catalog, this package is suspect in the "bootleg-ish" sort of way. But if bootleg it is, it's one of the better bootlegs I've encountered. The "superior reflective qualities" of the "custom pressed gold disc" are convincing. (It appears to be something along the lines of genuine gold. 10 karat?) I don't know where they got the masters to "re-master" and digitally re-mix (it's labeled ADD)if Rhino didn't fork them over, but the source tapes must have been decent, and the technology used quality as well. The package compares favorably with other SBM ("super-bit-mapped") recordings I've purchased. These recordings sound life-like, warm, and vibrant, ... Read More:

I had several of the Slugs' albums on vinyl back in a previous century, but I lost track of them for many years and only rediscovered them on CD a year or so before Doug Bennett's untimely death. I was delighted with how well this music had aged, if anything I appreciated the mix between energetic pop songs and more thoughtful numbers with insightful and often bittersweet lyrics more than ever. And it's hard not to like a band that sounds as if the members are having fun, it's a refreshing contrast with the brooding self-pity that so many rock musicians indulge in. Like some other Canadian Bands (Rough Trade or The Tragically Hip come to mind) the Slugs deserved more commercial success than they achieved, the name of the band probably didn't ... Read More:

It's great to see a couple of record labels releasing compilations of full length, non-beat mixed dance singles for collectors, like in the old days. With this double disc set, Water Dance Music really took a commercial route, so you won't find any real peak hour club anthems here, but there are definitely some popular radio hits. Most are long versions, with few exceptions, as listed in my track times below. Thing with a couple of the short mixes is...some of them sound like they were either faded in, or faded out early, and not actual short versions of the songs. But, overall, this is a must have for collector's of dance singles.

I once saw George Porter playing with Snooks Eaglin in Rock n Bowl, and Snooks broke out with Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years." Porter felt around for a few minutes and then started playing along. After the show he said, "Man, he was trying to kill me." If you're from New Orleans, songs like "Honky Tonk Women" and "Disco is the Thing Today" won't surprise you at all. This is The Meters. This is Snooks, Boogie Bill, Tuts Washington. Name 'em. These old school New Orleans musicians have an ear for what's going on, except they reform it and take over. (Listen to The Meters' "I Want to Make it With You" on Live on the Queen Mary.) Odd covers and quirky versions of the latest thing are what The Meters were all about as a live act. This is ... Read More:

It's a shame one of the greatest (funk) bands of all time doesn't get nearly the amount of attention they deserve. I first heard them in middle school from my brother and immediately liked them. Now that I've gotten a little older and enjoy music much more I realized it was a disservice not to own at least one album by The Meters. I remembered this was the album my bro had, and I loved it, so I had to buy it. Although there are a few not-so-good songs, there are many more fantastic songs throughout that more than make up for the others. Get ready to be funked!

The company that produced this CD, Collectables, mostly does CD reissues of albums that were once available on LPs (1 CD for 2 LPs, or sometimes 3). This one is different; the originals for this collection were singles recorded by Dinah Shore for Columbia in the late 1940s into 1950.
Many people think of Dinah Shore in her later role as a TV show hostess and do not realize how good a singer she was. This CD ignores her big hits in the late 40s, such as "Buttons and Bows," and, as its title suggests, concentrates on lesser-known recordings. So it certainly shouldn't be your first Dinah Shore album if you don't know her work. But it is a nice collection of her recordings to go to after you've gotten her biggest hits.
