The world of Blues harmonica has a competitive edge like no other. When two harmonica players get together, it generally leads to an all-out musical brawl to see who can outplay who. In Chicago "headcutting" sessions have left competitors dazed and bleeding since the 1930's. There is little room in the world of Blues for harp players to consider each other equals.
Once in a great while a talent shines through that makes all the rest of us stand in awe. William Clarke was one such talent and like many of his forerunners, Clarke shined just long enough for us to get just a taste of his enormous talent before burning out. William Clarke played the harmonica with a power and authority rarely seen.

I bought this on a whim and have continued to be astonished by the scope and quality of the material with each listen. I picked it up at list price (around $50.00) but this is worth double, even triple the price. You can find all the material in the set on other recordings, but to duplicate the range of material you would be paying several hundred dollars. I have some of these recordings on other Cds but have not found the quality better even though they promised remastering and clean-up. When you are talking about material recorded from the 1930's and early 40's there is only so much remastering can do. The quality of sound ranges from excellent to poor, but the general range is very good for this material.

In my state of travel I put on this CD to find an aray of bliss and contemptment.
It starts off by dilutting your spirit, bringing it down to a pace of chill. This illusion that captivates and put the listner in a zombie state carries one to a melodic charm of new orleans. A place we should all be. A certain style and rythmn all are missing. It is clear that people from the UK have a good idea of what is cool and know how to rape cultures and pass it off as theirs, nontheless the CD ends with a bass tribe and rapid thinking with a complete 180 of the senses. I enjoyed this album and highly suggest it to the chill collection.
