Listening to this album is like being struck in the face with a really big, intellectual-level book about the dark side of human nature. Except the pain is good, because it is revealing sides of human life that maybe you wouldn't attend to otherwise.
When I first put this album on I felt that it may be too intense to become a favorite; many of these songs are written from the "shadow side," from the point of view of characters with fractured lives: a survivor of Dresden who despises tourists who come to visit the ashes; a man whose karma has been inverted so that he is never punished when he brings harm unto others; a man whose emotional faultlines cause earthquakes, and other similarly fractured people. Intense as these sketches ... Read More:

This album is like a soundtrack to a horrid nightmare. That is why I like it. But that is it. I just like it.
I've always loved Today is the Day. In the Eyes of God is a masterpiece in my opinion. Temple of the Morning Star was my first exposure to them..So I hold that album in pretty high regards.
If Steve Austin was going for something really F'd up with this, he accomplished his goal, respectively. In between the music, there is filler..I hate admitting that. Although, there are some great songs here. But, don't start with this release.
Go with Temple of the Morning Star first..And then on to In the Eyes of God..If you like what you hear then pick up Sadness will Prevail. This album might test you. It is an unusual piece of work.

I knew Roy Jones Jr. could do anything in the boxing ring, and it sounds like he can do a lot on the mic as well. Filled with hooks, this album is NOT your usual ahtlete-turned-rapper vanity project. RJJ can rap, period. And he can switch it up too, with a good flow, fast or slow.

I love everything about this album, EXCEPT for the lo-fi production values. I wonder if Steve Austin keeps things lo-fi to keep some of their original indie cred to them, keeping them from being orthodox members of the extreme metal crowd.
Really, he wouldn't have to worry. I remember seeing Austin as a wee lad opening for I don't remember who at the Uptown Bar in Minneapolis. It wasn't near as Metal, but it was all the excruciating anguish and dissonance that you hear on _Sadness Will Prevail_. Fast forward fifteen years and I am a full-blown Mastodon fanatic and I find out that drummer extraordinaire Brann Dailor honed his chops with Austin. And then I work my way to this album--HOLY OF UNHOLIES!!! These guys are all over the place. Crimsonesque ... Read More:
