North is an album that is an acquired taste. As an avid Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin fan, I certainly did not love North when I first listened to it, but after a while I began to appreciate what a masterpiece it truly is. It just is different than previous Something Corporate albums, but might be the best (although I do love Ready...Break too). The highlights of the album for me are: "Me and the Moon", "Down", "Miss America", "Ruthless", and a bonus track on international albums "Watch the Sky" (which I consider to be one of my top 3-5 Something Corporate songs of all time. You can get the three bonus tracks as downloads ("Watch the Sky", "This Broken Heart", and "Unravel"--a Bjork cover) from www.soco-online.net. Other notable ... Read More:

I know this is just an EP, but how a CD that has the emcees of this caliber on it goes for less than $1.00 is beyond me. I mean, I could go into detail like I usually do, but I'm just going to say that the production is dope (Organized Noise, 88 Keys, & Mr. Khaliyl) and list the names representing here:

Mos Def, Kool G. Rap, Common, Tiye Phoenix, Posdnous, Rah Digga, Punchline, J-Live, Dante & Main Flow [Mood], Pharoahe Monche, Nine, Talib Kweli, Breeze Brewin' [Juggaknots], Wise Intelligent, Mr. Len, John Forte, Shyheim, El-P, Channel Live, and Cappadonna....and they all united to take a stand against police brutality and the murder (let's call it what it is) of Amadou Diallo.

The line up itself makes this a must have ... Read More:

I came to this recording long after buying the studio recording, which Horne, MacCracken, Scotto, and Jerome Hines, released by Columbia. I thought it would be wonderful to experience this vast opera in live performance. I am sure it would be. This recording is not complete, and it doesn't give a very good representation of the work. The sound quality is simply horrible, I mean horrible. Meyerbeer may not have been Wagner in his orchestrations, but he was very meticulous about what he wanted (often writing the changes in various colors of ink to test them out in performance), and we as listeners are simply robbed of that experience. I much prefer Gedda in the Role of Jean to MacCracken (who is not a favorite singer of mine to begin with), even though he ... Read More:

Decompoze - Decomposition: I'd never heard the album just knew the Binary Star stuff. This is one of those gems. Decompoze is the best underground Hip Hop I've heard to date. Production is good quality and his flows are conscious, wicked feature artists. You'll be into the album off one listen. True Hip Hop at its finest.

I owned the Philippe Herreweghe / La Chapelle Royale recording of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Tragédie lyrique, 'Armide', long before I bought Minkowski's recording of Gluck's opera. I was eager to learn what Christoph Willibald von Gluck would do with Philippe Quinault's libretto nearly one hundred years later. I think the differences are interesting. Of course, Gluck dropped the prologue, and Gluck's orchestra is considerably different from the one employed by Lully.
In both operas the role of Armide is sung by a soprano and the role of Renaud is sung by an haute-contre (tenor) voice.

I have listened to both operas extensively and I cannot honestly say which one I prefer. The Gluck opera owes a clear debt to Rameau and his experiences in Opera ... Read More:

Armide is Lully's last - and in my opinion, best - opera. So, why not 5 Stars? The music is first class; the singers are the best in French opera. If "le perfide Renaud me fuit" doesn't grip you, nothing will.

My problem is with Herreweghe's detached and lifeless direction; just 2 Stars for him. He approaches the opera as if it were performed in church: reverent, academic and stripped of emotions. Lully's music is passionate and erotic. Remember, this was the man, who crushed his own foot thumping the beat of the music with his staff! In Herrewghe's approach, the man might have dropped a wet rag. The French reviewer complained that the "northern fogs" cloud Herreweghe's interpretation of this work.

Armide is one of the best operas ever written ... Read More:
