YOU WOULD SWEAR THAT THIS WAS A RECENT CONCERT. THE SOUND QUALITY IS UNBELIEVABLE AND ANYONE WHO IS A FAN OF MARVIN GAYE WILL BE MORE THAN PLEASED . ITS AS IF HE IS STILL ALIVE.I RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL R&B,FUNK AND JAZZ FANS. IT HAS ALL THOSE ELEMENTS.ALSO IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR MARY WILSONS BAND ,ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. THEY LOVED IT!

This 1971 release was Grover Washington, Jr's debut for Motown (or was it CTI/Kudu?) and sees the saxophone virtuoso in soulful but raw form. He tackles the Motown-era song catalogue with gusto and I guess one could call it smooth jazz but make no mistake: this is not the lazy kind of smooth jazz as is done by the likes of Kenny G, George Howard, Dave Koz, Marion Meadows (shudder) or even Kirk Whalum (who I can just about tolerate, in places). As opposed to merely covering other people's songs, think of this as reinterpreting them. His take on Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" is a jazz-funk masterpiece as is the shorter "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology). This album is fantastic. Period. I have never heard so many genres of music blended together so seamlessly and so perfectly. This album is good for background music at a chill party or a glass of wine by yourself. Highly recommended!

Don't just listen to this one. No, immerse yourself. This is one of those albums that you have to listen to in a situation where you have no distractions whatsoever, so you can pick up on all the brilliant arranging specifics. If you're playing it in the background for some sort of social event, it's just fine, a nice album with three really great songs. But when you're actually listening, and picking up on the stylistic blends and compositional ingenuity... then it clicks. Everyone talks about the lyrics here above all else, and while I like them, I think the real reason why this has endured as a milestone is because of the musical approach.
