Being a fan of Buddy DeFranco, Oscar Peterson, and George Gershwin, how could I not enjoy this one? There are a few places where the strings lend a little schmaltz, but it happens seldom. I absolutely love DeFranco's playing on this one. He is normally known for using a minimum of vibrato, but here he does use it more, especially in slower stretches, and it sounds fantastic. A good example is the beginning of "The Man I Love." Garcia's orchestral arrangement of "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" is very powerful, just masterful. I also loved "Someone to Watch Over Me" (both versions), but it would have been better if Gershwin's intro bars were included. That intro is Gershwin's best; it has a life of its own. These two albums were Columbia releases originally, and sounded good. Both are presented here in a highly flawed manner. The Gershwin Bandbook album is in mono, despite the fact that it was originally available in stereo. There is no excuse for this. The Explosive Sound of Les Brown is in stereo, but BOTH albums are clearly transferred from vinyl records rather than master tapes. The are fairly clean transfers, but they are obviously from records as sources. There is no licensing statement on the CD inserts. While I draw no firm conclusions as to the legitimacy of this release, it does seem to me that most legitimate reissues are able to get master tapes as their source material.

Sings the George Gershwin Almanac of Song

Chris Connor singing Gershwin, who could ask for anything more! Miss Chris Connor, though somewhat underated, should be on the tip of every jazz lovers tongue!! Her cool, clear, sweet interpretation of the lyrics enhances the words and it's overall meaning.
There is not a bad song on here. I especially like her uptempo tunes: "Strike Up The Band", "I Got Rhythm", "I was Doing All Right", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Slap That Bass", "They All Laughed", "Love Walked Right In", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now." Of course any ballad she sings is to die for, most notably: "But Not For Me," "For You, For Me, For Everyone", "Blah, Blah, Blah" "Love Walked Right In", and "Embraceable You."
