If you love guitar-driven music and are looking for something interesting that still rocks, then Stevie Salas may be for you. S&TE,V1 is a 2-disc collection that spans the "best of" Stevie Salas to date and includes a wide range of funk, rock and ballads.

It's kind of a Hendrix-meets-Tom Morello sound, and at times it's out of this world! Mostly contemporary, slightly cheesy, definitely head banging, high energy, funky and pretty original.

Stevie has big credits too... he used to play for George Clinton (Parliament), has toured with Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger, and provided the fingerwork for Rufus's stunning guitar solo in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Not bad for an unknown guitar God.

As much as I love Stevie Wonder as an artist, it's almost impossible to buy every last album he's ever released. Not only that, it would be way too costly to attempt (though I would say every 70s album SHOULD be bought). This set is the epitome of what a compilation set should be -- virtually every meaningful song he has made over his vast career. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to know what Stevie was about in one stop.

So for all you folks who aren't "hipsters", the term "bag" connotes a genre of something ("I'm not into that bag, man")... in the musician's lexicon, it means a body of work or a style of music ("the hard bop bag", "the Basie bag"))... so these are all Stevie Wonder tunes, done by Ernie Watts ages ago, and it is a bit confined and pop-oriented but it is still Ernie playing. Yes, it's a novelty and probably something Ernie would rather see burned, but hey, it must have paid a few bills at the time, so good for him. It's fun and light-hearted, and the arrangments are not very challenging, but what the hell... it's still grandmaster Ernie Watts at the helm... a musician's gotta eat!

I adore Michael McDonald's voice so I really want to like his albums because I want to listen to him. But after having listened to all of his latest stuff, I have to say that even though his voice is still fantastic, the cheesy studio music and mediocre production of the tracks makes them for me, unlistenable (don't know if that's a word, but you get the point.) Just when his voice begins to soar, I'll hear the cheesy drum machine, or some musak sounding backup singers. It destroys it for me. Michael needs to find himself a real rock & soul band to put him on top. Musicians who could match what he can do vocally, with a really great producer, is what's needed to make that most of that voice. I'm still waiting.
