The Chinese composer Tan Dun has gained great acclaimed over the last 15 years or so for his blend of Western avant-garde stylings and Chinese folk materials. Born in 1957, the composer was sent into the countryside during the Cultural Revolution to participate in peasant work. He made lemonade out of these lemons by absorbing a great deal of folk music, and signing onto a Peking Opera troupe that visited the area. Tan Dun came to New York in the mid-1980s, studying with figures such as John Cage, and he began to work towards a synthesis of East and West.

Throughout his compositional life Henry Brant, maybe the last great maverick and experimenters of American music, remained fascinated with what his publisher calls "Ensembles of a Single Tone Quality", which may be aslo described as Homogeneous Timbre ensembles. Besides the present compositions for flute ensemble, there is Orbits for 80 trombones and other pieces for 50 trumpets or 50 guitars. It allowed him for experimentation with timbral color, oftentimes mixed with Brant's most famous visiting card, the spatial dissemination of the instrumental groups in widely separated points of the recording venue. But Brant's music is not just fiddling with timbre and space. It is genuine, evocative, impactful and poetic music.

Reznor always did best when it came to instrumentals. I loved the Still album, but it was so short I wished there'd been more. I heard about Ghost IV and saw it in BestBuy for $10 so I decided to get it. This is exactly what I wanted. Some of the pieces are more synth and beat based, others being more focused on somber piano and strings. None of the tracks have names, just numbers. My favorites are Disc 3: Track 4, Disc 4: Track 1, and Disc 4: Track 7. They evoke a strange wave of emotion that's hard to describe, if you remember "Adrift and At Peace" and "Leaving Hope" from the Still album, its kinda like that. This probably isn't the best album for Metal/Industrial fans, but if you like classical, ambient or game music this would be right up your alley.
