Jon Deak's overall musical style is immediately striking: a creatively original utilization of the spoken word integrated with chamber instrumentation. The Passion of Scrooge is (in my opinion) the most highly successful example of Deak's idiomatic compositional style of his musical 'sound' integrated with a literary work. Deak's take at once renders the Dickens work timeless: not in-your-face contemporary, but not necessarily mired in 1840s London - and it works. His imagination is rewarding at every turn, from the great utilization of each instrument's potential to the musicians of the 20th Century Consort themselves coming in with the occasional vocal offering. let me start by saying I really don't know anything about this band but I did get the chance to listen to this CD and it is quite superb. Fans of Dream Theater and Queensryche should be right at home with this. The musicianship is great and the compositions are solid throughout. I see that at least one reviewer had an issue with Mike Baker's voice but I fail to see what the problem is. I heard much worse in more popular bands, so spare me.
Concept album or not I don't care, all I know is my ears tell me that the band kicks butt and the songs are solid. Get it and hear for yourself.

let me start by saying I really don't know anything about this band but I did get the chance to listen to this CD and it is quite superb. Fans of Dream Theater and Queensryche should be right at home with this. The musicianship is great and the compositions are solid throughout. Monk: Atlas - An Opera in Three Parts

As is clear below by the existence of 1 and 5 star reviews only, Meredith Monk is like most 'modern classical' composers. You're either going to love this or hate it. For my part, on first listen, I wasn't sure which category I would fall.

First, I must confess that my bias has always been against opera. Composers of opera tend to butcher both the melody and libretto all in the name of an elusive drama that usually falls quite flat. That being said, if you are a fan of traditional opera a la Gluck, Verdi and Wagner, you will never like 'Atlas' which consists mostly of wordless vocalise over repeating patterns played by a 10 peice orchestra. The cast mimics animal noises, claps, screams, shrieks and orrates occasional gibberish.
