This 4-volume series from Recollect Music was made in Spain and, in terms of content and sound quality, is very similar to the multi-volume series Hey Look What I Found from Canada. Also like that series there are no liner notes, although on the reverse showing the contents they do provide the Billboard chart information. For serious collectors of original hits this is a little goldmine, as many you will find (as I did) are guaranteed to be among the most difficult to find.
The contents of Volume 4 are: 1) The Fang - Nervous Norvus (did not chart in 1956 for truck driver Jimmy Drake); 2) Joey's Song - Joe Reisman & His Otch (did not chart in 1957); 3) Yellow Dog Blues - Joe Dareensbourg & His Dixie Flyers (# 43 1958); 4) ... Read More:

Great CD. My personal favorite from SNZ. An incredibly diverse assemblage of musical styles and influences. Complex arrangements and performances, but still manages to be melodic (it's very easy to catch yourself humming tunes from this CD out of no where).
I just hope that they can keep it up. The musical world desperately needs bands like this!

Every Squirrel Nut Zippers album stands by itself, telling a different story, and writing the soundtrack for a movie never made. The Inevitable told the story of big band jazz of the 20s. Hot depicted New Orleans hot jazz at its finest. Perennial Favorites weaved the tale of different genres of music coming together to form one sound. And now, we have Bedlam Ballroom. This album, in my opinion, is the Squirrel Nut Zippers' best effort to tap into the mainstream jazz genre. You people can decide if that's bad or good. Personally, I choose the latter. Why, you ask? Because the Squirrel Nut Zippers can appeal to anyone even remotely interested in the jazz genre and still retain some wild and eccentric attitudes. Just look at "Ghost of Stephen Foster" ... There is absolutely nothing wrong with the music on this cd, it is mostly "Hot jazz" and excitable dixieland music with the energy of a punk rock band! However there is no reason to acquire this cd at all, you should just buy thier cd "HOT," which has all of their hottest jazz sides, and best vocals, and the exciting trumpet solos of Duke Heighter. If after you buy HOT, and you need more, buy Perinnial Favorites, and that's all that is essential. This cd has a sampling of thier cd's, but this cd leaves off a bunch of essential tracks from thier exciting and creative HOT set, which is by far more essential. Only pick this up if you can get it at a low budget price, otherwise HOT should be easy enough to find at used cd shops in the ... Read More:
