Search: Concerto- Op. 8- No. 4 Winter: II. Largo
from: Sony
Release Date January 03, 1992
Today, there are two completely different approaches to the early music. One that employs conventional orchestras, famous conductors that comress a various repertoire of almost all categories, and make a stereotype, a superb performance that is close to synthesized music free of any personal touch or style frame. On the other side, there are specialized ensembles and conductors that master just one category, composer or style, that have hard time bringing up just some music or just hint of a style of the period they inteurpret. Latter one is my favorite.
For the most parts, this is a historical "Le Quattro Stagioni". Ms.Jean-Claude Malgoire, an eighteen century( music) conductor, master of Handel's operas, leads his ... Read More:

This is one of the classic recordings of The Four Seasons. The violinist's son, the composer John Corigliano, has contributed a charming program note about how his father, "an arch romantic in all things musical," had to be convinced by Bernstein of the style and phrasing in this performance. Eventually, he loved the recording, and with good reason. Bernstein leads about 1/2 the Philharmonic's strings from the harpsichord. He always seeks to characterize the music fully, either through tempo shifts or extremely vigorous rhythms. His realization of the harpsichord continuo part would be reason alone to acquire this disc, a wonderful exchange of ideas from one composer to another. Corigliano plays beautifully, and really enters into the spirit ... Read More:

I really like this CD. The music was very uplifting and soothing at the same time...I play it for my fetal son every night before bed with headphones that I stick onto my belly. I don't know if it's doing anything, but I can hear it too and it almost puts me to sleep :)

It seems that there can sometimes be too many famous musicians in a recording and this CD is an example of that. It's as if they're all trying hard to distinguish themselves from each other since it could be the last Four Seasons recording that Isaac Stern will perform in. They seem to go too fast in some areas, too slow in some, and go full force only to back off quickly. They also did some improvisation with some of the pieces, which were okay, but again, too powerful. They really heightened the prescence of the harpsichord, which everyone knows isn't really Vivaldi's strong point in his works. Also, the orchestra does not harmonize well in many areas. I was disappointed by this. But these gripes are about the Four Seasons interpretation. The rest of ... Read More:
