First, a caveat: the old vinyl version of this performance of the double concerto is the one I grew up with. So you take take the following with however many grains of salt you wish. But this is one of my favorite Brahms compositions, and I have yet to hear a better performance. Not only are Stern and Rose in top form and beautiful tone, they truly stand alone in the unity of their playing. As noted by another reviewer, their trio experience really shows; phrasing, dynamics and hamonies are immaculately matched. The sound is not that of two instruments, but of one instrument of glorious range and beauty. In comparison, there are more modern, athletic performances out there, but to my ear they sound cobbled together, sometimes too much ... Read More:

Mendelssohn/Brahms: Violin Concertos

If you haven't heard these recordings, you have a nice surprise ahead of you. The Mendelssohn dates from 1981 and the Brahms from 1982. Because of the recording dates, you've got the young protege, Anne-Sophie Mutter, firmly under the leadership of the old master, Herbert von Karajan, with that marvelous orchestra to draw on for generous support.

Ms. Mutter has never been closer since then to the gentler ways of performing these pieces as she is here. The accompaniment is very well balanced and perfectly complements the solos.

Being used to a lot of fire from Ms. Mutter, some may complain that these performances aren't sizzling enough.

The number of the grand old men of the podium seems to be receding far too quickly, so many are the number of truly brilliant young and youngish conductors before the orchestras today. But there are times when the mellow approach to the greats such as the Brahms symphonies surface and we are reminded of what longevity with the baton yields.

Such is the case with Cristoph von Dohnányi. He is a mighty, weighty master whose depth of knowledge brings something very special to performances. I won't get tired to affirm that Brahms' chamber music is well upon his Symphonic and Concert works. The true nature of the musical form, the unrestricted expressiveness of his Pastoral approach and the most genuine essence of his musical thought must be seen throughout his chamber works. And thence, once you have been involved by his éclat, go then for his Symphonic and Concert works. Otherwise you would be able to obtain a non desired and distorted vision of him as composer.

First, the music performed here is simply magnificent - Beethoven's op. 61 and Brahms' op. 77 are some of the best violin concertos for my opinion. The other 2 concertos are great as well. There are many exciting, thrilling (and familiar!) moments all the way. No doubt you'll enjoy the music.

Then there's the performance - which is also great most of the way, with Stern giving a very worm and appealing violin sound and performance, and the accompaniment integrates just as well. I've heard a few other performances to most of the pieces here, and those from here are my favorites.

Finally, the recording is, surprisingly, very good. Although the original recordings are from the 60s, the sound is relatively clean and accurate, without too much "hiss", and ... Read More:

Brahms wrote the greatest romantic violin concerto. Szeryng and Monteux understood it. Perlman and Guilini understood it. But neither Hahn nor her conductor understand it. The Stravinsky, on the other hand, is very good for three of the four movements. However, the third movement drags as if Stravinsky's concerto needed a dreamy adagio. It doesn't, as Stern's recording with Stravinsky illustrates.
