I believe, as another reviewer has stated, Bach's music may be the best ever written. Also, I think the cantatas are not where Bach placed his heart and soul. He was, after all, employed as a canter and in a position he did not wish for, but was forced to take to feed his large family. (I recommend "Bach and the High Baroque" lecture series by TTC.) What really stands out on this collection are all works in volumes 8 and above. Some of these works are hard to find and having them all in this collection and preformed on original instruments is great. Bach is priceless and so then is this collection.

I have listened to several recordings of these Bach pieces, and this recording by Isaac Stern with the English Chamber Orchestra is outstanding. It ranks as one of the three best, I feel. Which one you like best is a personal preference. I also like the recording by Anne-Sophie Mutter and I can't think of the other one... I think by Gidon Kremer.

The Bach piano concerto recorded by Bernstein and Gould is really the best recording I ever heard. The brightness and virtuosity is heard througout the entire concerto. OK, the concerto is Monoaural, but is much better than the lot of recordings of the concerto available out there. The Bach Violin concerto is excellent (however, the Karajan/Ferras is better, more well balanced...), the sound quality is perfect, considering the analog source.

In the day of scholastic Baroque playing, these performances may sound very anachronistic. But one thing Thibaud does here and nobody, except Kreisler and Milstein could do is that Thibaud brings these pieces "alive." There is a marvelous lack of "dry academism" in here that is actually really refreshing. Thibaud's sense of rubato and pacing is an art itself(and unfortunately a "lost" art these days). This is a fine example of the fact that Baroque music can be playing with Charm. Not for stuffy academicians or "hi-fi" buffs, but highly recommended for violin enthusiasts.

Bracing Bach! Bouyant and breezy, with lots of air. Tempi are quite rapid, but the secret to their success, I believe, is that Goebel et_al. give a strong beat at the beginnings of measures and are much lighter on the secondary beats, creating the illusion of cutting the pulse of the music "in half", as when shifting to a higher gear a car moves faster but the engine noise lowers to a more relaxed pitch. What might seem at first breathless, as one grows more aware of its charms, feels absolutely right, and as observed in earlier appraisals, the results are "breathtaking", and "very expressive" indeed.
