Introduction:
This was the first complete (and now there is an even MORE complete Davis recording) set of this wonderful opera. Before Beecham and Davis recorded it, this opera had to undergo a very large-scale demystification process. The myths surrounding this opera were bigger than the opera itself, and nowhere half as noble. Rumor had it that the opera was "impossible". It is not impossible, and it is certainly not as difficult to stage as any of the Wagner operas. But Berlioz had few real champions, while Wagner had legions. So the "impossible" was really a prejudice, and it took conductors like Beecham, Munch, and Davis to bring Berlioz back from the crypt of obscurity. And what we rediscovered was a titan of music.

I enjoyed this version more than Davis' old version. Casandre is stunning in her opening aria and the sound is wonderful. Hepner is slightly an odd choice for the role but all others are great(and i do love hepner)

This CD is the true Cuban sound of the Island today. It has all the Nueva Trova, Timba, Son Montuno, Guanguanco and more. These talented musicians are not known outside the Island, and the only place that comes close to this music is "La Casa de Pepe" in Key West. After the 911 incident I was sent to Key West to work in support with the local law enforcement agents. During my stay of one year in Key West, I had the pleasure to meet the owner (Pepe) who was very nice to my troops. This Cuban restaurant is a riot on the weekends especially with the entire tourist that come off the cruise ships to dance to the beat of the Latin band that plays all night long.
