3.5 stars. I have a great affinity for Peter Hammill's 1970's work--I've not yet heard enough of his later material--including his work with Van der Graaf Generator. There is a plaintive and ruminating seeking into the larger questions of existence and relationships which runs through the weighty, prolific volume of his lyrics. Among prog lyricists, he is the Bard of Introversion, has captured so well the world-view (and malaise) of the extremely reserved person struggling to connect with the world around them. ("House with No Door" and "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" come to mind.)

Two things to bear in mind:-
Both CDs are copy-coded - and as a result, you may find them unplayable in a personal CD player.
On my copy the 'Gog' half of `Gog/Magog (In Bromine Chambers)' is hidden in the minus-numbers between tracks 6 (The Comet...) and 7 (Magog, minus ten seconds which are also hidden in the minus-numbers). I suspect the CD manufacturer was having a laugh at our expense.
As to the music - the star-rating indicates that I love it. See reviews of individual albums...

This album, originally released in 1974, is NOT, in my opinion, `...one of the least focused, pompous, not to say embarrassing albums of his career', as one reviewer below laments. I don't know what sort of audio system they utilized to play this recording, but I certainly wouldn't call it `tinny'. Guy Evans' drums (Peter's band-mate from Van der Graaf Generator) thunder like the hooves of all Four Horsemen at once. Throughout Peter's career, his music has changed stylistically from one release to the next. Some of his albums (such as 2002's stunning CLUTCH) are centered on his acoustic guitar work - some, like this one, are more keyboard-oriented. There are alot of ways to approach Peter Hammill's body of work. Described as doing for voice what Hendrix does for guitar is no small accolade. This collection of 'live' solo performances is a great selection in itself, but what really shines(imo) are the liner notes by PH describing the nuances of performing each set,how guitar or piano enchances each piece...and how as an artist he "becomes" his creation, riding the wave of emotions and energy inherent in each. These liner notes are excellent for the beginner as well as seasoned PH fan.Very cool.
