Lennox Berkeley: Ruth

This chamber opera based on the book of Ruth has a dramatic libretto by Eric Crozier and a surprisingly effective score which due to limitations at the time premiered, includinng two flutes and piano. Despite the fact that all of the singers and the orchestra performed their parts superblly, I really could only recommend this to people who are interested in berkeley or chamber opera.

So what exactly prompted The Herbaliser to release Same As It Never Was on the infamous Studio !K7? After all, their deep discography is tied almost exclusively to Ninja Tune [if anyone knows the answer, drop me a line]. Since 1995, Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry have released five studio albums and two live mixes on Fabric (see my previous review of Fabric.26), not to mention a dozen singles, appearances and remixes. The group has also grown from an original duo into a full 5-piece band - you have to check out the amazing Session One album (Department H., 2000). Same As It Never Was indeed sounds a bit more funky, as the group is attempting to trace the hip-hop roots and bring back the elements of jazz, r&b, and soul. This time they are also joined ... A GOOD REPRESENTATION OF GIBBONS' WORKS.

Gibbon's church music covers two broad fields. On the one hand there are settings of texts for the 'ordinary' offices. In contrast, there are the anthems which themselves divide into full and 'verse' types.

The full anthem is self-explanatory: it is a setting for the full choir. Examples on this disc are: 'Hosanna to the Son of David'-'O Lord in thy wrath rebuke me not' and O 'O Clap Your Hands'.

The verse anthem intersperses solos for one or more voices, usually from the beginning of a work, with short choral passages which repeat or reinforce the preceding solo material. The verse anthems probably have their origin in the consort song, a secular solo form, accompanied ... Read More:

Five of the pieces on this 1995 CD are also on the 1993 Weelkes and Tomkins anthology by Marlow and the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge on Conifer 74321-16071-2. However that disc, if it is still obtainable, is full price yet this one is budget. There is little difference in the performances, both are excellent; though Summerly takes things a little faster than Marlow (for example "When David heard that Absalom was slain" is 4:03 on Summerly's recording, 4:52 with Marlow). Gloria: The Sacred Music of John Rutter

This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Gloria is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, representing influences ancient and modern. This was recorded at in 1984, with the City of London Sinfonia and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble collaborating.

The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). I'm surprised this cd has been reviewed as well as it has... "Alive" is just so generic and the whole album follows suit. Anyone looking for cutting edge dance music ought to look elsewhere.. and oh yeah... the autotuned/vocoded vocals are terrible but its probably better than the natural sound of Kevin's voice.

It is quite rare that a D.J. will actually and trully enjoy an entire mixed CD done by someone else. It is almost sacrilige to own one if you, your self, are a D.J. In this case I can tell you that after being a DJ for almost 17 years in the South Florida Market that this is one of my favorites, if not the best mixed house CD that I own. Eddie did an amazing job not only mixing the singles together but more importantly picking great tracks for the project. All you have to do is put it on and close your eyes and you will automatically be transported to any of the many South Beach hot spots in Miami Beach, FL. This CD is a must-buy for House music fans and clubbers, you will not regret buying it.
