The Szell Mendelssohn is a recording I first heard in the late '60s via LP. I then bought the cassette and later the CD version. One hundred years from now, the Italian should be of legendary status. The orchestral playing is simply astonishing. I have heard it at least 100 times and still cannot believe that any orchestra could play with that kind of precision. The slow movement is a little too fast for my taste but the rest of the performance is magnificent. A must CD for any classical collection. The Hebrides is also close to perfection. Unfortunately, Sony decided to include a rather tepid performance of the Scotch symphony. It is very cold and boring. Andrew Davis and George Szell are simply not in same league and should not be ... Paul Duncan has listened to the whole Nick Drake catalog, and studied Pink Floyd early albums very carefully. He's also gotten into Eno's ambience albums of the early to mid 70s. He's taken all of that and put elements of each into this record.
He could make a really cool accessible album if he could just get past the self indulgence. There are only about 3 or 4 tracks on here that feel like they're finished. The rest, sadly, have an unfinished feel to them. If this had been released as an alternate CD to songs to a main CD, then it would be OK.
Clearly, he's got talent, but maybe on the next effort, he'll get past the studio experimentation and make a fully developed album.

Somehow, over the years I've become something of an aficionado of movie soundtracks - they're a great way to find overlooked musical gems. Like virtually everybody else here, I'll give this one a big thumbs-up. Definitely one of the best, if not the best soundtrack I've ever come across.
If you're also a fan of this CD, I'll assume you have great taste in music (which, of course, really means your taste is similar to mine). For what it's worth, some of the other, perhaps more obscure, soundtracks that I feel are also well worth owning are: "Flirting With Disaster," "So I Married An Axe Murderer," "Blue In The Face," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Starstruck" (good luck finding that one).
