Gershwin: Porgy And Bess

I've heard many versions of this work, but this Grammy-award winning recording (1976 Best Opera Recording) stands out as having the best performances. Francois Clemens (from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood!) shows some real chops as Sportin' Life (hitting all the high notes), and Florence Quivar sings the BEST "My Man's Gone Now" ever recorded, not being afraid to drop to her chest voice for intense dramatic effect. Maazel brings out all the sparkle in Gershwin's long orchestral sequences.

I've had this on LP for years, and finally found a used library CD. It's the only Porgy I can really listen to - the others pale in comparison.

Hank Garland was one of Nashville's best session guitarists of the 50s. He wrote the instrumental "Sugarfoot Rag" when he was only 16, and went on to play with many of country's notables. He became interested in jazz, which was not appreciated by the C&W community. He was seriously injured in a mysterious late-night auto accident - his car apparently had several bullet holes in it. He suffered brain damage, and had to relearn how to walk, talk, and play guitar. He never recovered his former health and skill, and died in December 2006. There are several articles about him on the Internet.

A Rap Collection

Alright, when you order an album called "A Rap Collection" you know it has got to be good, right? Right? Wrong! This "collection" doesn't even feature Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (Scherzo) or Henry Mancini's slick and well-known Pink Panther theme song! To add to the madness, I couldn't find any Limp Bizkit on the CD! I say to my wife (and she can atest to this) "where's mah bizkit!" and she says "I don't know. You were walking around with a biscuit a while ago; what did you do with it? Oh, there it--Peter! How many times have I got to tell you you can't leave things on the coffee table! Look, now! Idlewild

Outkast is probably one of my most influentual groups to come out of the hometown of ATL. That being said, this album was a slight dissapointment from all other Outkast albums that I've heard. Being based off the movie "Idlewild" I figured this would be a nice album in connection to the movie it was based on. Like a lot of people noticed, this album is like "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below". In fact it's a little too much like it (I'm suprised it wasn't a double disc as well). With Andre 3000 doing more singing, he sounds a little off with his vocals. I understand that he was experimenting with his singing vocals on "The Love Below", but I just wasn't feeling it on "Idlewild". Newer fans od Outkast (post "Stankonia") will like it, but those who have been down since ... Read More:
