This is another high-calibre album showcasing Placido Domingo's mastership of Italian opera. He is captured in his glorious 1970's voice, still in his prime, with a supreme high register and darkly expressive baritone-like lower register. Particularly impressive are the Puccini, French opera and bel canto opera excerpts. This recording starts off with the romantically melancholy "Una Furtiva Lagrima" from Donizetti's bel canto work Elisir D'Amore. The stunning, lyric Roberto's aria from Puccini's early opera Le Villi is well done and conducted by Lorin Maazel with the London forces. The Love Duet between Madame Butterfly and Pinkerton is gorgeous and Renata Scotto and Placido Domingo's voice soar to heights of passion without strain in this ... Read More:

This is a delightfully varied collection of pieces, from lovely ballads to lively numbers that get your feet moving. Even the teenagers in my household enjoy this CD (you know how hard it can be to find music that both parents and kids want to hear). "Coventina's Well" has gotten a lot of playing time in my home. I'm hoping to see more releases of music with this range and appeal.

This CD was originally recorded in 1983 and the quintet consists of Braff (cornet), Scott Hamilton (tenor sax), Chris Flory (guitar), John Bunch (piano), and Phil Flanigan (bass). Anything with Scott Hamilton on it is worth a listen. "China Boy" swings hard and is the highlight of the album. Braff's gorgeous tone is evident throughout, especially on the ballads such as "Goodnight my love." A very good CD that will not disappoint.

Barbara Harbach's review in "Women of Note Quarterly" reads (in part): Elizabeth Lauer is the performer as well as the composer on the pieces of her CD entitled "Five Flower Rags," which is also the title of the first pieces. "Fleur de Lou" has an arresting swing between duple and triple time coupled with Lauer's wonderful sense of spinning out a phrase. Her sense of rubato gives added flair to the piece. "Hibiscus Rex" uses a clever design of mixed meter underlying the engaging waltz tune. "Magnolia" contains more melodic decoration, and rich, harmonic language. Full of nuance and long-breathed phrases, "Columbina Linda" conveys a sense of languor and musical richness. ... Read More:

This is a LOT of Puccini, but there is no better voice so well suited to this composer. Gheorghiu has a magnificent technique, which she makes work for her; however, the CD includes arias she would unlikely ever perform on stage, such as Turandot's arias as well as Liu's. She also has fun with both Mimi's and Musetta's arias from "Boheme". In this case, she can easily handle both roles. So much Puccini in one listening becomes less interesting than her CD's with multiple composers.
