I am a BIG FAN of Eyvind Kang's work--from his own stuff to his work with Secret Chiefs 3 and his contributions to Bill Frisell's jazz work, I am continually amazed at the diversity and ability of this guy. He was a perfect addition to Secret Chiefs 3, because Kang can put all forms of music together into wholes, jazz and ancient rhythms and reggae all able to sit within the same song, all of course played exquisitely.

I also maintain with gusto that John Zorn played himself out a long time ago, his improvisational noise (believe it or not) formulaic, his works predictable. But I give the man full credit for opening the door for many another artist whose work might not have gone with much notice had it not opened under the obscenely ... Read More:

This was the first cd my family ever bought right after we got the first cd player we ever got, and it was the only cd we had for a while.

Well, it was beautiful. And it still is beautiful. So beautiful, I can't say in enough writing space how beautiful it is. Since they don't give you the track listing here at Amazon. com, I'll tell you what the songs are. There's a lot or a little of breakbeat, techno, house, synth-pop, hip hop, reggae, and 70's soul featured in this mix. It's a collaboration of 9 members that make up Bugz in the Attic, and with each one picking a track or two, it makes for a huge variation across the board of musical genres. What is notably missing is any of the genres this group is most known for: deep house, nu jazz, and broken beat. They've gone for something completely different with this mix series that is well known for basically, putting whatever the heck you want on it.

For those of you who know about KYLD, it is located in San Francisco and used to be called WILD 107.7, as the album cover would suggest. However, on my birthday in 1997, this radio station changed to WILD 94.9 KYLD, from WILD 107.7 KSOL. Ever since, they pump out the craziest House/Trance/Techno/Rave jams as well as your garden variety of R&B, New Jack Swing, Rap and even some alternative. The headliner on this rare, short-print album is St. John, a damn-good producer of KYLDs music and someone whom I have gotten to know and respect. John Digweed leaves off were Renaissance 1 ended. This collection, though long out of print really exemplifies why I got into this music in the first place. The mixing is spectacular and here in 2003 some of the songs sound outdated. However, this compilation accurately captures a moment in time in dance music history and shows you a little of what things were like in 1995. This is truly uplifting progressive house. I own all the early renaissance mixes and this one still touches me in that special way and just gets me up wanting to dance. If you can, pick this one up, you won't be disappointed. I own all the early renaissance mixes and this one still touches me in that special way and just gets me up wanting to dance. If you can, pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.
