I can't tell you how often I play this record and the images it conjures up. I can imagine Mick and Keith sitting around drinking Bordeaux wine as they go over the recordings in Keith's house in Nice. If ever there was a rock and roll record, well this is it. How can you not get up and dance to "Rip this Joint" or "Tumbling Dice?" How can you not slowly sway to "Sweet Virginia?" Mick really sings his heart out on that one. The music here flows without effort between Rock, Gospel, Country and Blues and you never notice. This is one of those albums you have to take as a whole and as a whole it's an experience that if relived over and over again, hearing something new, imagining something different, each and every time. Keith sings and you can understand him. Some different live songs, and Jack White sings on Loving Cup. If you are a middle aged rock fan, try White Stripes if you want to feel like you're still in touch with something from this century, although I later heard it in the Safeway supermarket. Anyway, Keith sings Connection, and Christine Agguilerra sings on Live with Me. The standards, Jumpin Jack Flash, Brown Sugar, but well worth the ride. I'm singing along on the beltway with it!

I really was looking forward to listening to this album, having spent most of my life a fan. I bought sticky fingers when it came out and pretty much everything else since. Boy was I disappointed with this one. I've seen them live, so I know the tempos are different live ... but crikey ... they rush through some of these songs as if they're late for something important. Mick's voice is poor ... really, I couldn't listen to the album all the way through and tried several times. Buy something else if you don't ave everything else yet.

If we, the Stones' fans, haven't kept this...uh..."memoribilia," we sure ain't going to recycle now. The "Exile" cards are worth something...so what? The music is worth more than the silly entrapments. Betcha the Stones themselves had naught to do with this.

Exile is not one of the Stones' more immediately accessible albums; it takes a while to appreciate its treasures. At first listen it might sound just raw and messy but eventually the scales fall from your ears and a true gem is revealed. Very much of a cohesive whole, the album gains momentum in its successive tracks to display the multifaceted rock virtuosity of the Stones at their most powerful. The music is intense throughout and often energetic. To me, the first section culminates in the lilting masterpiece Tumbling Dice.

The yearning country strains of Sweet Virginia introduce the next segment; this song reminds me of Far Away Eyes on the 1978 album Some Girls. Torn And Frayed has a similar soulful country feel and the catchy ... Read More:

This cd is a sludge filled masterpiece. It has a ragged, raw, almost "outtake" quality and it is unpolished inspiration in the vein of Neil Young's "Tonight the Night". This is the pinnacle of the Stones' run of 3 incredible albums (Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St) from 1969 to 1972.

I remember vividly the Stones' 1972 Tour when they played alot of tunes from this double album set (Keith Richards sitting on a stool picking the opening acoustic guitar lines to "Sweet Virginia").

The unpolished sludgy blend of black Gospel, blues, and rock is far superior to the bloated commercialism that would mar their later albums. The music comes off as inspired, loose, and free as if they were just letting themselves just go. The music ... Read More:

For classic rock bands, the double live album was an essential part of their discography. The double STUDIO album on the other hand was a different animal altogether. Keeping an audience's attention over the course of 4 LP (now 1-2 CD) sides isn't always easy. And the few that worked (The White Album, Physical Graffiti, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Blonde on Blonde, Electric Ladyland) are rock and roll classics. The Who actually accomplished this feat not once, but TWICE (Tommy and Quadrophenia). Unfortunately, the Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street" isn't one of them.
