The String Quartet Tribute to Rush's 2112

Search: A Passage to Bangkok
from: Vitamin Records

Release Date March 08, 2005
Parts of this CD are played during the Snakes and Arrows concert tour while the audience is waiting for the show to start. The songs are the same from city to city and the list was put together by Neil Peart himself.

Obviously Rush is not upset at this tribute. The parts I heard at the concert (Overture and Temple of Syrinx) were very well done. Knowing what it sounds like, I would buy it. But I can see how some can and would be unhappy upon listening to the arrangements the first time.

Listen and judge with an open mind and you should not be diappointed.

Release Date November 15, 1993
I was driving home from a friends house and listened to this CD that I had stuck in my console. I remember purchasing 2112 on a whim, as an LP, in 1977( freshman year in high school). I played this over and over and made a cassette recording to play in the under dash player I had mounted in my dad's car. It brought back ALOT of memories of fun times and innocence, a time when there were no cell phones, internet, computers,CD's, high def. etc. Going to second base in the back seat of your dad's car was exciting and dangerous, hiding beers in the woods and lying about whose house you were sleepng at. This was truly played over and over and over, whether it was at a friends house on the turn-table singing along and trying to match Geddy's high ... Read More:

Exit... Stage Right: String Quartet Tribute to Rush

Search: A Passage to Bangkok
by: Various Artists

Release Date July 02, 2002
Calling this a "string quartet" tribute is a bit misleading, on two counts: firstly, (and granted, this is a nitpick) the traditional string quartet comprises two violins, a viola, and a cello (no bass or other add-ons); the second shortcoming is much more serious.

Other than the solo violins, most of the music has been produced electronically--that's right, the "quartet" is made up of a couple of violinists accompanied by a computer! Anyone who buys this recording expecting to hear the Canadian power trio re-invented by classical musicians is getting ripped off. Is it any wonder that the front cover describes the "artists" as a generic "string quartet," rather than telling you exactly to whom you're listening?

The arrangements ... Read More:

Snakes & Arrows Live 2 CD Set

Search: A Passage to Bangkok
by: Rush

Release Date April 15, 2008
1) Was it really necessary to release yet another live album? Nope.
2) Can the guys still play their instruments and pull off a semi-decent show even though they must be pushing 60? Yes, though barely - energy levels are clearly different.
3)Can Geddy still deliver the goods? Sadly no - and here for me, is the clincher.

I've been a Rush fan for 30+ years and own EVERYTHING they've ever released. For the sake of completeness, I bought this CD but I have to say that the listening experience is rendered painful when listening to Geddy trying to hit the notes.

I was playing it in my car when a friend, hearing Rush for the first time, remarked "the music's OK but the singer sounds so affected, like he's really struggling''. It ... Read More:

Exit...Stage Left

Search: A Passage to Bangkok
by: Rush

Release Date July 01, 1997
Rush is one of those great bands that knows how to put out a great live album. They proved that in the late '70s with 'All The World's A Stage' and proved it again in 1982 with 'Exit...Stage Left.'

This was recorded on the 'Moving Pictures' tour. Neil, Geddy and Alex jam here, just like on the previous live album, and perform concert classics like 'Tom Sawyer,' 'The Spirit of Radio,' and 'Xanadu' brilliantly.

'A Passage To Bangkok' is far superior to the studio version. This is just a great version, and this version was so good, Mercury put it on their 1992 compilation 'Chronicles.'

Overall, if you like Rush and great live records, than you'll love 'Exit.' It's a classic. And Mercury did a great job remastering this. In ... Read More:

Chronicles

Search: A Passage to Bangkok
by: Rush

Release Date August 20, 1990
Regarding Rush, I guess I'm a "moderate" fan. I have a lot of respect for them as a band, and I like several of their songs, but when I started buying all their albums I wasn't into a lot of them also. Yes, I prefer a shortened version of 2112! The gripe: one of my favorite Rush songs, YYZ, is not on Chronicles (the only other Rush CD I own is Moving Pictures, so that's OK - all the others I had like 2112 and Fly By Night and Signals were on cassette). The bottom line: Chronicles is an awesome "best of" Rush double CD. For a casual or even moderate Rush fan Chronicles probably has everything you need. I like "older" Rush much better than the newer, so I listen to disc one MUCH more than two. Some of the songs on there are among my all time favorites from any band - Working ... Read More:
